West Monroe, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,779 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Mississippi River and is east of Baton Rouge. The first permanent settlers in what would become West Monroe were French Canadians who founded a trading post on the present-day site of downtown in 1812. In 1816, Englishmen arrived and built a dam across the river to control flooding that had occurred during times of heavy rainfall. This community was called "New Orleans" by these early colonists because they thought it would be more likely to be accepted as their new home than another small town on the riverbank. In 1840, when Jefferson Davis became President of America and overturned Reconstruction which had followed his South Carolina victory in the American Civil War, Davis ordered all white men over 25 years old to leave any Confederate territory they may have inhabited within one year. Many African Americans who remained in those areas decided to migrate westward or southward into Union territory where opportunities were greater for education and work than back east where Reconstruction had failed to materialize. So many people turned away from West Monroe that no schools existed until after World War II when volunteers started teaching children there how to read and write. In 1870, a group of farmers began clearing land for farming around what is now downtown; this led to development around what is now third Street NW between Washington Boulevard and Interstate 10 (now I-10 Business Loop). The railroad came through town in 1887 so goods could be transported downriver; this also led to an increase in business activity around what is now Fourth Street NW between I-10 and US 66/US 601 (now I-985). A grocery store was built on Lafayette Avenue NW near Third Street NW about 1900 which became known as "the grocery store on Third". At this time, most people here worked for local companies such as landlords, truckers, mechanics etc.; however some managed their own businesses over time including Harry Smith’s Service Station just off First Street NE between I-10 & US 59 (now I-10 exit 5) beginning about 1925 which continued until about 2003 when it closed due to poor health conditions; however photos still exist inside looking out at today's Walmart across from KFC restaurant next door! An interesting fact about West Monroe is that it has been unincorporated since 2000!

Over time there have been several major developments here such as the opening of two new high schools; Stroudwood High School (now Harrison High School) in 1957 and then Acadiana Junior/Senior High School (AJHS) which opened its doors to students in 1966 which led toWest Monroe becoming one of America's leading regional educational districts when it merged with neighboring Jefferson Parish Schools System that year creating one of North America'slargest school systems by enrollment In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place around downtown west monroe including construction of new housing, retail development along I-10 & US 90 as well as numerous professional sports teams playing their games at Tulane University & Superdome since Hurricane Katrina caused substantial damage to nearly all aspects of this community West Monroe has long been home to many families who have contributed materially to its economy both through agriculture and manufacturing while also providing stability for generations within close-knit communities . These days there are also numerous small businesses throughout town that provide services such as plumbing, trash removal or general contracting - often doing brisk business during times like these when demand for goods and services exceeds available supply .
