Gun hammer history in West Monroe, Louisiana began with the first settlers in what is now West Monroe in 1836. The town was founded on a Baton Rouge plantation by General David Dixon and his wife, Nancy. At the time of its establishment, there were only two other settlements in Livingston Parish-Covington and Monckton. The land that would become West Monroe was originally granted to General Dixon by the French government for his service during the Battle of New Orleans. In 1840, when Livingston Parish was created from parts of St. Landry Parish, Partridge's (then known as Rapides Parish) store became the first business in town. The original gun hammer- a tool used to pry nails out of wood or metal- was made by Anthony Fenton of Mobile and patented on March 9, 1841. It featured a heavy iron head with a Sonsherwood handle designed to be easily wielded with one hand while holding an armload of nails with the other. Gun hammers continued to be produced throughout most of the 19th century; however, they slowly replaced traditional hammering techniques as tools for nail driving and assembly work became more common. By 1870, allhammer production had ended in Louisiana due to economic reasons though they continue to be produced regionally today. In 1892, John Jourdan bought land adjoining Frontenac Plantation and started using it for farming purposes before developing it into what is now West Monroe Town Hall Square Historic District. His company soon became known as Jourdan Manufacturing Company which built many iconic products throughout much of Louisiana including refrigerators, radios, televisions, weapons systems and more! One particular product that continues to be popular today is their ubiquitous panpipes which are often played at carnivals across the state! Today’s residents know little about their past due largely to cultural influences brought over from nearby Texas where gun hammers are still commonly used for various tasks including striking sparks off firearms during hunting season! A post office called Fort Gibson was established in 1817, and construction on what would become known as downtown began that year. As long as slavery remained legal in Louisiana, however, white men could maintain ownership of black slaves without consequence. In 1853, however, a statewide ban on slavery resulted in many slaveholders moving their operations south into Texas and Florida; this led to a major influx of white settlers into central Louisiana and West Monroe quickly became one of their most important centers. By 1880, however, a change had occurred: freedmen were coming back into Louisiana from Oklahoma Territory; this new influx transformed West Monroe from an agricultural community into an urban center thanks to development around downtown including schools (including US Military Academy) and businesses catering to African Americans who had returned home after years away from Baton Rouge or New Orleans. During World War II (1939-1945), large numbers of American troops arrived in Southwest Arkansas; many chose to stay near Amarillo before moving on down through Central Texas towards Memphis where they joined forces with British soldiers occupying France during V-E Day (8 May 1945). This massive military operation created thousands more jobs than could be found elsewhere within postwar America - but also led to increased social tensions among different groups living together under one roof; these tensions would culminate several years later with the Stonewall Inn Riot inside Baltimore's Inner Harbor
