West Monroe, Louisiana is home to the oldest gun store in the United States. The store was founded in 1868 by George W. Butler and his brother-in-law, Hiram Watson. The store was known for selling firearms and ammunition to local farmers and hunters. In 1904, the shop moved from its original location to a new building on Jefferson Street. The store closed in 1958 but reopened as an antique firearms store in 1978. In 1984, the old building was demolished and replaced by a new structure which still serves as the headquarters of West Monroe Gun Club. In 1919, John Browning opened a gunsmith shop called "The Armory" in West Monroe. This shop became one of the most popular sources of firearm supplies for local farmers and hunters. In 1951, Floyd Berger opened another gunsmith shop called "Berg Arms" in West Monroe. This shop became one of the most popular sources of firearm supplies for local law enforcement officers and paramilitary groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. West Monroe is a small town located in southwestern Louisiana. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. The community is part of the Lafayette, LA Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent residents of West Monroe were French colonists who founded the community in 1718. By 1800, the town had a population of about 100 people and was named for General James Wilkinson, an officer with British forces during the American Revolutionary War. In 1812, Wilkinson signed a Treaty of Fort Jackson naming West Monroe as an English colony but it reverted to French control in 1814. In 1815, United States troops burned down what are now known as Wilkinson House and Store on Main Street in what is now the heart of West Monroe. This event helped spur development in the area and by 1830, there were several stores and homes on Main Street alone. In 1840, Green Gables was written by Wuthering Heights author Emily Bronte and published in Cincinnati Ohio which inspired many immigrants to move to Louisiana looking for work opportunities in newly forming America. Some settlers brought their families with them while others chose to remain permanently in West Monroe. In 1860, Mary Todd Lincoln visited West Monroe while she was campaigning for president against her Republican opponent John Bellamy Booth Jr.. When she arrived at Wilkinson's store on Main Street she found that locals had already built a new grocery store three blocks away which would serve as her campaign headquarters for Hancock County during her run for President two years later. Sometime after this visit though no records exist to back up this claim; however some say that Mrs Lincoln may have seen or tasted polio vaccine available then which may have led her to support its availability during her time as President
