There are currently six existing “islets” – all of which were created when Hurricane Katrina destroyed many other areas of Louisiana after landfall on August 29th 2005.

In the 1930s, West Monroe became an important military base during World War II because it was located adjacent to the Louisiana Maneuvering Area (LMA). As part of LMA operations, West Monroe played a key role in developing airfields across Louisiana including Bossier Field and Shreveport Air Force Base. In 1957, West Monroe merged with neighboring Lake Charles to form one municipality known as Orleans Parish. Although Orleans Parish has experienced some growth since then (due in part to suburban development), West Monroe remains an important community within its boundaries. Due to its location near major highways and airports, the town has seen continued development throughout recent years into new subdivisions and neighborhoods that reflect modern-day lifestyles within its limits.
