West Monroe, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,452 at the 2010 census. West Monroe is the only municipality in Jefferson Parish. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become West Monroe were French colonists who arrived from Canada in 1799. They named their settlement after Admiral de la Salle, who had explored and charted the Mississippi River before dying in 1759 at the age of 50. The area that would eventually become West Monroe was known as Point Pleasant until 1812 when it was renamed after General James K. Polk because he had commandeered an American warship there during the Mexican War of 1846–48. After the war, most of Point Pleasant reverted to its original name while some land within modern-day West Monroe was annexed byPoint Pleasant and given to its residents as compensation for their losses during that conflict. France retained ownership of a small portion of Point Pleasant which became known as La Nouvelle Jussieu (New Orleans Boulevard). In 1853, two major floods destroyed many homes and businesses near present-day LSU campus; this made necessary the erection of levees around what are now campus buildings to prevent another such event from occurring again. In 1862, a post office was established at Point Pleasant with mail being delivered both ways between New Orleans and Baton Rouge using horse drawn wagons; this service ended when railroads came into operation through central Louisiana and transportation became more efficient. The first settler to live on present day US route 66 (then called CR 4) which bisected Point Pleasant Township was John Hatton in 1865; his home still stands today on North Lafayette Street just east of I-10/US 65 intersection.) By 1870, over 25% of all agricultural production in Jefferson Parish took place within five miles of Point Pleasant along US route 66; thus it became known as "the Beltway". In 1902 voters selected Mayor Dolphus Byrd as mayor pro tempore over Tishomingo Prentiss for a term that would expire June 30th due to Byrne's candidacy having been accepted by both factions despite lack Of support from either party or local elected officials. On January 2nd 1903 Byrd inauguration ceremonies took place outside City Hall where he unveiled new city ordinances including one prohibiting smoking indoors even though cigars were then legal under state law! In 1907 Hurricane Fred struck New Orleans causing extensive damage throughout much southern Louisiana but no loss or fatalities occurred within our community located about 20 miles southeast (and actually upstream from downtown)… however severe flooding did occur downstream affecting parts north & east Long Beach & St Landry Parishes…. This gave us our nickname “The Ghetto” thanks to some very courageous citizens who volunteered their time (& talents) cleaning up aftermaths…..UNfortunately we have not seen such devastation since then although areas adjacent have experienced significant growth…..Today WEST MONROE has evolved into an exciting vibrant community filled with wonderful people all working together toward common goals……..
