When Jefferson Davis became president in 1848, he decided that Missouri should be divided into two districts - one including west Montchanin Street and east Jefferson Street (now Elmwood Avenue), and one including eastmont Avenue (now US 9) and west Jefferson Street (now I-10). This change affected eastern side of town which had been named for John Quincy Adams while western side had been named for James K Polk; both names were changed back to their original forms when Davis died in office on April 12, 1849. When human settlement began around AD 1000 near present day Monroeville and Old Hammonds Crossroads about 11 miles due NNW of downtown New Orleans on high ground overlooking alluvial fans between Lake Pontchartrain to the north and Iberia River to the south, people hunted game with bows and arrows while gathering plants such as okra or casseroles made from plums or watermelons found along riverside banks during times of low water levels; these gardens would have grown up around buildings where families would have gathered fruits seasonally or stored harvested crops during times of no rain/ flooding etc... West Monroe is a town in southwestern Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area. The town was established in 1836 by General James Wilkinson as an outpost on the west bank of the Arkansas River opposite what is now Monroe Parish. Wilkinson named it for his father, John Wilkinson, who had served as a colonel in the American Civil War and died at West Point before he could see action. In 1845, Wilkinson's son-in-law, General James Foye, founded a trading post here with help from American missionaries and fur traders. By 1860, West Monroe had become an important stop on the roughboat trade between New Orleans and Texas. In 1871–72, Confederate forces burned down much of eastern Louisiana during their attempt to take control of that state; this destroyed many small towns and villages in southwestern Louisiana including West Monroe. Afterward, most residents returned to live in their homes or nearby settlements such as Baton Rouge or Shreveport until 1890 when they were deported by federal authorities following Reconstruction efforts to reopentha region to white settlement after itskellowness under Reconstruction governments
West Monroe was first settled by the Houma people in 1711. The town was originally named "New Iberia." In 1812, the name changed to West Monroe after a General Andrew Jackson's invasion of Louisiana. The town was platted in 1824 and became a village. On July 15, 1855, West Monroe incorporated as a city under the name of Monroe. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location on the Mississippi River flood plain. However, by World War II, Monroe had shrunk to its present size due to suburbanization and other factors.
