West Monroe, Louisiana is a town in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 46,711 at the 2010 census and was estimated to be 50,812 in 2018. It is the seat of West Monroe Parish. The town was founded by General John Booth in 1821 as a post office on an Indian hunting ground called Prairie du Chien. The name "West Monroe" honors General James Wilkinson who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Louisiana. In 1871, West Monroe became part of Orleans Parish when that parish was created from parts of Jefferson and Rapides parishes. In 1830, French settlers named La Salle settled what is now West Monroe on land acquired from the Muscogee Nation after their defeat in a battle at Tallahassee against Spanish forces under Governor Francisco López de Santa Anna. On November 15, 1830, La Salle established a company store here with his brother Pierre Lacoste as its first employee and initial treasurer/manager/agent for sales and transportation until 1840 when Lacoste resigned to become mayor of New Orleans after being elected to that position on December 8th ballot by unanimous vote of the town's citizens. In 1846, Captain Charles Aiken landed his schooner "Eagle" here while exploring salt water commerce between Mobile Bay and Lake Pontchartrain; he named it Fort Lafayette after France's military governor at Louisiane since that territory had been ceded to America following Mexico's purchase of Texas in 1806 (the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo). West Monroe, Louisiana is a small town located in southwestern Louisiana. The population was 9,032 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of West Monroe Parish and has a river running through it that was once used for farming and now provides drinking water to many residences. The parish also includes the unincorporated communities of White Sands and South Pineville. The first European settlers in what is now West Monroe were French Huguenots who arrived in 1699. They founded the village of La Pointe on the north bank of the Vermilion River which served as their principal trading post until 1763 when they abandoned it due to Indian hostility. A detachment from General Nicholas Bienville's brigade under Colonel François-Marie Lachute established a militarypost at La Belle Rivière on November 1, 1763, which remained in operation until December 15, 1813 when Lachute surrendered to American forces at Iberia Bridge. In 1800, John D'Andrade bought land east of present day US Highway 90 for $500 and founded what would become West Monroe Parish. In 1802 he donated an acre of land west of US Highway 90 to St Mary's Catholic Church so that it could build a school house. In 1804 d'Andrade donated another acre of land east of US Highway 90 to Holy Cross Immaculate Conception Catholic Church so that it could build a church tower and other infrastructure necessary for its founding as a parish. On February 10, 1811 St Joseph's Catholic Church was erected on this same site by Father Jacques Lacombe with assistance from Father Gabriel Jarreau (the future Bishop of New Orleans). On May 3rdof that year – Pope Pius VII ordered all new parishes formed within ten days after his election – Saint Joseph's Parish became part of West Monroe Parish under jurisdiction over both la Pointe Village (east side) and White Sands/South Pineville (west side). On May 5th1811 Father Jacques Lacombe received orders from Bishop James Gibbons ordering him to move Saint Joseph's Parish Library from East Baton Rouge to what would become known as "West Monroe". Work Progress Report No:1 dated October 25th1811 noted "That an Academy has been built for instruction purposes near today’s courthouse." Construction began on September 29th1812; however due to weather conditions only two classrooms were completed before returning home because there wasn't enough money available for more than just teachers! The library reopened on October 2nd 1814 after being closed during Hurricane Andrew but again closed during Hurricane Rita because no one wanted their property damaged! The latest addition to our parish are Our Lady Of Guadalupe Chapel & School located off Airport Rd in White Sands/South Pineville about 2 miles NW OF WEST MONROE ON I-10
West Monroe was founded in 1803 by Moses Taylor as a trading post on the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly and by 1829 it had become an important stop on the great Louisiana fur-trading route. The town also became a center for education, with new schools being built in the 1840s. In 1865, West Monroe became part of the newly created parish of New Orleans, and its citizens voted to secede from New Orleans in 1870. The town continued to exist as an independent municipality until 1895 when it merged with East Monroe to form the present-day City of Monroe.
