West Monroe is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 12,613 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The name "Monroe" comes from the Choctaw word "moo-nuh". In 1754, French colonists named it Nouvelle Iberie after their leader, Louis XIV of France. The first settlement in what became West Monroe was made on October 29, 1802 by Pierre Laclède and his family as a trading post on the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1830, John Crain built a cabin here and started farming land that he donated to the parish. He served as sheriff from 1832 to 1840 and as justice of the peace from 1841 to 1850. In 1847, Wm. Henson organized an agricultural society in honor of General Lafayette and set up a store thereon which became one of the most successful in west Monroe. In 1865–1867 A&P Land Company erected two cotton gins on what is now Main Street; these mills are still standing and are now used for storage purposes by local farmers. In 1893 Jno Pugh opened his grocery store at 9 Eubank Place which soon became one of West Monroe's most popular businesses providing fresh fruits and vegetables as well as groceries until 1979 when it closed down due to budget cuts by then-Mayor John Whitehurst Jr.. Jno Pugh later reopened his store under new ownership which continued operations until 1997 before being moved out into storage status again for many years until it was demolished late last year (see photo). A&P Land Company operated another cotton gin at 527 Canal Street until 1924 when this mill also ceased production because limestone rock unsuitable for cotton production began falling out of the ground where it stood; this mill has since been torn down but some evidence remains aboveground around its foundation including three large logs dating back to circa 1865-1866 . This particular gin produced over 100 tons per month during its heyday however today only 3 or 4 small pieces remain remaining with minimal traffic coming through today due to Locust Grove bridge closure pretty much taking away any potential business opportunity left behind!

This led to significant growth for African Americans within the community during Reconstruction, with many professionals and businessmen moving to West Monroe from larger cities in order to provide opportunities for black people. This progress was made possible by new state laws that granted blacks citizenship and protected them from discrimination throughout the region. During World War II, West Monroe played a vital role in the war effort as a military base for Gulf Coast troops assignments such as airfields and supply convoys. After the war, many of these same veterans decided to stay behind after V-E Day and start businesses in what is now downtownWest Monroe. Although some businesses failed during peacetime because of competition from larger regional institutions such as Walmart or Sears(which opened nearby), most small businesses thrived during postwar boom times thanks to Western Standard Time which allowed more opportunity for open competition among entrepreneurs statewide (a policy later repealed). Today, much like before it was an overwhelmingly white city anchored by one major business district flanked by smaller neighborhoods filled with identical houses on dirt streets - all while serving primarily commercial functions unrelated to its civic life or cultural heritage?
