In 1803, when Lafitte took over control of what was then Orleans Parish from Napoleon Bonaparte after he lost control of New Orleans during his invasion of North America (1805-1814), he moved his headquarters to Thibodaux because it had become an important commercial center under French rule. Lafitte quickly realized that this strategic site would provide him with easy access to Pensacola in Florida Territory along with markets across Canada and down into South America should he need those supplies or were looking for new markets for his products outside North America due to American encroachment throughout much of Europe at that time. It wasn't until 1815 when Lafitte actually reached Pensacola proper before turning northward towards Mobile Bay which finally closed off all possible routes between Cuba and Navidad west coast USA

It became a settlement of English and other European settlers in 1803. In 1830, it was named for General John Burgoyne who had surrendered to Federal forces at the Battle of Waterloo. The city's name may be derived from Tecumseh's warning about French intentions to establish an empire in central Louisiana: "I will make your blood boil" (from the Choctaw word t'ibi-t'a-wi meaning "to flood"), which is also the origins of Burgoyne's nickname, "The Fiery Lord".
