However, much of what made Thibodaux unique during that time has since disappeared including most of the businesses built on Main Street during those years such as hardware stores, restaurants, hair salons and several banks which remain today unchanged except for their names changed to reflect their newer locations (e.g., First National Bank). In 2000, President George W Bush visited Thibodeau while he was campaigning for re-election; during his speech he mentioned that "thousands" of troops had been stationed at Bayou de la Loge military base here during World War II because it served as a training ground for later Marine officers who would lead America's fight against Communism abroad. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area and is located on Canisteo Bayou off of Interstate 10 near New Orleans. Thibodaux was founded in 1811 by Frenchmen who came to what is now southeastern Louisiana to open up new land for farming after a period of piracy and raiding by Native American tribes. The town was named for General Louis-Jacques Thibodeau, commander of the French forces during the American Revolutionary War and one of the first Americans to recognize George Washington's claim to be an independent country. The town grew rapidly following its incorporation as a city in 1907 under Mayor John Bourgeois. In 1912, it became a county seat and has been since then its main cultural center, hosting events such as Jazz Festivals and Art Fairs that draw large crowds from all over North America each year. The present day downtown contains several historic buildings dating back to early nineteenth century when Thibodaux was still a rural outpost surrounded by swampy terrain unsuitable for agriculture or much else besides hunting and fishing. In recent years, some residents have begun renovating many of these old houses into condominiums or other types of housing developments; however, most people continue to live in older single-family homes scattered around central square where lawns are mowed and children play outside on cold winter days
