The area now comprising Thibodaux was originally inhabited by the Natchitoches people who were displaced by European settlers in 1718. The area became part of Jefferson Parish after Orleans parish was organized in 1804. In 1819, Thibodaux incorporated as a city; it had a population of about 20 people. In 1830, two years after Louisiana become a state, an act to create Jackson County was passed by the General Assembly and signed by President Andrew Johnson on March 25th. The new county included parts of Lafourche Parish and all or most of what is now eastern Jefferson Parish including Thibodaux and its neighbor, New Iberia (now Monroe). The first white settler arrived in what is now Thibodaux in 1832 with Captain John Browning fromMobile Bayou Company #2 under contract from Wilkinson & Co., merchants based at Baton Rouge. Houston Street was named for him when it was platted as a town square near downtown Thibodaux in 1836–37. Browningtown reverted to Indian name upon his death some time before 1840 – probably around 1840s or 1850s according to Rufus King’s history book “New Orleans: A Century Of Progress” (1899). Englishman John Troup came through Acadiana during both the American Revolution and early 1800s looking for land west of Mobile Bayou where he could build plantations; he reached Biloxi Harbor on April 10th 1815 on Ship “Albemarle” having left Baton Rouge four days earlier aboard HMS Bounty which had been captained by Lieutenant James Cook on his second circumnavigation of America northward beyond Cape Horn! At that time there were no towns east of Mobile bayou although many French Creole families had settled there since c1700 due to British military occupation plus later Immigration from Acadiana etcetera When Troup learned via shipboard informants that $5 per day could be earned Farming rice without work upriver he decided to cross over rather then thrubayous backcountry He called himself Catrinaeux but eventually anglicized as Catrinaeux de la Rivière et des Alpes aka Colonel JohnBrowning After reaching Biloxi Harbor Captain Browning reported finding fertile ground for farming so far east not mentioned by Poutrincourt & Goulet his previous colonists In 1830–31 only men capable of bearing arms accompanied English Captains searching for new lands westward along Mobile Bayou & Arkansas River estuary As more men arrived early 21st century exploration increased with development alcohol smuggling especially headed into Gulf Coast region numerous steamboats sailing out Rio Grande do Sul Land Grant Treaty made December 12th 1865 following American Civil War ended slavery within U S also opened interior West Texas Frontier extending up river about 400 miles
