Thibodaux is a town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,642 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Thibodaux was founded on a plantation by Jean-Baptiste Thibodeau in 1804. The town began to grow rapidly after the construction of Interstate 10 in the early 1960s and became an incorporated municipality in 1980. The original owner of the land where Thibodaux now stands were three brothers who named themselves Thibodeaux: Jean Baptiste (1762-1837), Alexis (1768-1836), and Antoine (1775-1854). They originated from Normandy, France. In 1804, they bought 1,500 acres of land at what is now Ft. Snelling in Livingston Parish for $400 per acre ($4 per head). They built a small cabin there and renamed it "Thibodaux". The first post office was established at "Thibodaux" on October 12, 1805. The Town of Thibodaux first sprang up around this time as people from nearby plantations started to move into the area to get away from malariacarrying mosquitoes that were prevalent back then. Eventually other plantations came online and trade took place between them which lead to more people moving into Thibodaux for work opportunities than ever before! By 1840 however, there were only about 100 residents living here compared to 3200 residents living in Baton Rouge! In 1880, when Lafitte County was created out of parts of Orleans Parish following his Raid on Baton Rouge on July 16 that year resulted in over 200 dead or wounded! At this time many farmers decided to move out west due to cheap labor costs while others chose not to leave their homes because they might have had trouble getting food prices down enough so that they could make a profit again! As such most businesses closed down during this time as well with only a few exceptions like one store which continued business until 1886 when it burned down! As you can see over time things have changed quite a bit within our community with people coming and going but we always keep our traditions alive like playing dodge ball during Lent or having Pancakes for breakfast during Lent!
Thibodaux was founded by the D'Iberville brothers in 1718. The town grew quickly, and by 1800 it had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1814, Thibodaux was named for General James Wilkinson, who had fought in the American Revolution. Thibodaux became a state city in 1865 and has since grown into one of Louisiana's largest cities.
