Thibodaux was founded in 1814 by Jean-Baptiste Thibodeau and others as the location for a new French trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River where he had located his previous posts. The post burned down in 1824 but was rebuilt and renamed Thibodaux in honor of General James Wilkinson who had led American forces against Mexico during the Mexican–American War. In 1827, Pierre Laclède built a gristmill on what is now Rue Lafitte to raise flour for local merchants. In 1830, Lafayette Morgan established a blacksmith shop on what is now Blvd de la Résistance which became an important center for African Americans in Thibodaux. In 1859, Lizzie Bourgeois organized a Female Anti-Slavery Society to fight slavery in Lafitte Parish and set up shop there until 1861 when Union troops burned it down after seizing control of that parish from Confederate forces under Braxton Bragg.
