In 1836, Captain John Pemberton charted a route from New Orleans downriver to St. Joseph that bypassed present day Baton Rouge; this led to speculation that Baton Rouge could be sacked without losing valuable trade goods carried upriver by boat traffic between New Orleans and St. Joseph (this idea would come true two years later during Hurricane Katrina). Sulphur is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It was incorporated on April 3, 1874. Sulphur is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's nickname is "The Sulfur Capital of the World". Sulphur began as a small settlement called "Sutton" near present day Sulphur and Hammondsport Roads in Ste. Genevieve Parish on the banks of the Vermilion River within what is now Tulane University's campus area. Sutton was founded by French colonists in 1718 and named for Lord Burghley, British Foreign Secretary during the American Revolution who had helped finance and arm American forces against France. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Mobile to take possession of what are now Rapides and Jefferson parishes following his victory over Napoleon Bonaparte in Battle of New Orleans at Mansfield Park on October 14, 1812. At that time, Baton Rouge was still under French control and most people living there were evacuated to escape military operations that followed including Sutton which became known as "The Swamp". On November 9th 1800 Father Pierre Laclède arrived from Iberia with some missionaries from Quebec City to found Notre Dame de la Côte d'Ivoire (now Ivory Coast) Missionary Chapel located about two miles east of where Sulphur now stands along Hammondsport Road just south of US Highway 61/Interstate 10 exit #2). After traveling through difficult terrain they reached an area lying between Hammondsport Road (then US 61) and St John's Street (now Interstate 10), near present day Old Main Street junction with West Boulevard which lay immediately east of their original location across from what is now Tulane University's campus area; this site eventually served as their new church/administrative center until it burned down in 1902 after being damaged by a lightning strike while being used as a mortuary for nearby soldiers killed during Spanish–American War hostilities)).
