Sulphur, Louisiana is an unincorporated community in Lafourche Parish, in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is located on the eastern bank of the Assumption River, east-northeast of Thibodaux and west of New Orleans. The population was 1,918 at the 2010 census. Sulphur is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to see Sulphur were two Frenchmen who sailed upriver from Biloxi on July 6, 1719, during a mapping expedition for General James Kenedy's Brigade under Colonel Robert Morris. They named their discovery "Sulphur" after Lord North American's mineral colony at that time in Canada (the original name for what is now Louisiana). In 1811–12 Captain David Cushman explored and charted much of present-day Lafourche Parish and its tributaries; he named several places including Sulphur after elements found there: sulphur (sulfurous), cushmanite (a saltpeter mineral), blacksmithy ( forge ), hardwood ( hickory ), Michelangelico lace ( silkworm dye made from flowers grown wild near his plantation near Monroe) In 1827 Napoleon Bonaparte ordered Pierre Charles L'Enfant to design a planisphere which featured Orleans parish as well as parts of Lafourche and St Tammany parishes lying between it and Mobile Bay; L'Enfant's map designation for this area was "Sulphur". One result of Napoleon's survey was to establish Claiborne Parish west of Baton Rouge about 1830; its seat was originally at Natchitoches but by 1836 it had moved to New Iberia. At that time most residents in all these parishes except Claiborne were white English emigrants or people descended from them through direct European lines rather than naturalization or admixture with local Native Americans like those in Louisiana before 1800. The town built around it gradually lost importance until becoming an unincorporated community when Interstate 10 bypassed it in the early 1950s. Today it retains only a small fragment of its original Spanish/Mestizo architecture which can be seen along Jefferson Street between US 30 and US 377 just south of Interstate 10 W 7th Ave

The Sulphur area of Louisiana was originally settled by Native Americans. The region was first visited by Europeans in the late 16th century, when a Spanish expedition discovered oil wells in what is now Sulphur County. In 1718, French colonists arrived in Louisiana and began to explore the area for resources. By 1730, several thousand French settlers were living in the Sulphur area. In 1762, a treaty was made between France and Spain that ceded Louisiana to France as part of the Treaty of Paris. The French colony at New Orleans grew rapidly, and within a few decades there were over 24,000 French residents living in Louisiana. By 1803, the number of French residents had reached 50,000. In 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered General Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne to take control of all of Louisiana from Spain. Le Moyne marched his forces through the lowlands of Louisiana and into Texas before turning back towards New Orleans. After reaching Baton Rouge on July 4th, he learned that Spanish troops had crossed into Texas and been defeated at San Jacinto Bridgehead on July 7th; Bonaparte therefore decided to abandon any plans to retake New Orleans and withdraw his army to Texas instead. On October 15th Napoleon signed an order ordering his general Gérard de Villamarin to march on Houston with 10 Belgian volunteers under command; this move set off a series of Battles of Astoria that led eventually to Houston's capture on December 3rd 1836. With Houston's capture came control over much of Lower Mississippi Valley which lay beyond the grasp or expelled American forces ever again
