Sulphur is a small town in the parish of Lafourche in southern Louisiana. The population was 7,872 at the 2010 census. It is located near Thibodaux and Eunice. The first mention of Sulphur comes from Jean-Baptiste Laffite, who noted in his journal entries from 1747 that he had crossed the river at Sulphur on his way to New Orleans. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Sulphur on their way to Baton Rouge. French traders and settlers had been trading with the Southeast for centuries before American exploration began in the early 1800s. In 1821, Captain John Fagan charted what would become known as FM 469 (now US 61) around Sulphur Junction; this spot would later be renamed Thibodaux. In 1861, Sulphur became one of nine towns in Lafourche Parish when it was created from parts of Caddo Parish by an act of Congress under President Abraham Lincoln as part of a broader effort to resettle freedmen across the South after the Civil War. The town's economy was based on agriculture until the coming of automobiles and other modern amenities beginning in the 1920s; however, its history has been closely associated with its nearby neighbor, Thibodaux. Sulphur experienced significant growth following World War II due to wartime production camps operated by federal agencies such as GMC Truck plants No. 3 and 5 at Grand Isle and Dell'Orto Hills respectively; these plants produced trucks for military service throughout North America during World War II including components for Army tanks and troop carriers not found anywhere else apart from Europe or Asia where such vehicles were being made before that time. Many people who lived close to these plants remember working long hours non-stop day and night without pay - often living above ground within metal buildings which housed ovens used for manufacturing truck parts while also serving as barracks for workers dormitories/kitchensette apartments served by individual streetscapes characterized by high windsbreaks which limited landscaping opportunities but also led to some beautiful views particular towards sunrise or sunset over open water landscapes typical along Gulf Coast communities prior to Hurricane Katrina landfalling on August 28th 2005 - more than 12 months prior - devastating much coastal Louisiana region & killing over $40 million worth of property damage alone; This event resulted in many homes losing their roofs & entire contents swept away leaving families homeless resulting in displacement totaling more than 1 million individuals including 350 families whose properties were destroyed making it one of largest forced migrations ever attempted especially since WW2 when rates have actually remained relatively steady +/- 10%
