In 1916, Sulphur hosted the first international rifle range contest which attracted top shooters from around the world. The rifle range still hosts competitions today. In 1928, Sulphur established its own police department and fire department. The community has experienced many changes over the years including being destroyed by a natural disaster in 1959 and becoming an all-white neighborhood after integration in 1964. Sulphur's history dates back to 1814 when French traders founded a trading post here named Musgrove. The name Musgrove was derived from an Indian word meaning "salt water." In 1821, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León discovered what would become known as Louisiana while sailing through the Gulf of Mexico on his voyage around America. He named it after General José de la Luz y Cabeza de Vaca, who had explored much of Central America in search for new routes to South America. In 1829, American troops burned down Musgrove because they thought it was an Indian settlement and renamed Sulphur after General James Fenton Butler's Forks Creek Expedition which landed here in 1830 with plans to explore and claim Louisiane for the United States. The first white settlers arrived in 1880 when Jerald Womack bought land here from Frenchman David Astor for $5 per acre (about $ today). By 1889, there were only a few scattered families living among some 1,500 African Americans working on plantations near by; most residents worked on nearby farms or managed local mills that produced goods such as flour, cottonseed oil and lumber. During World War II, military personnel stationed at Fort Polk made use of Sulphur's salt works which turned out munitions essential to Allied forces fighting against Axis Germany in North Africa and Europe. After the war ended, many soldiers return home but their civilian jobs did not end until well into the 21st century due to lingering effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) brought about by combat experiences during wartime operations overseas
