In 1870, it became a city when Sulphur Railroad was completed. In 1890, it was designated as the seat of government for Orleans Parish on the condition that New Orleans be moved there. The city lost its status as a city in 1929 when the parish was restructured. It regained its city status in 1975 when Orleans Parish metropolitan area was created from parts of Jefferson and Lafourche parishes.
