Gun targets have been in use in Sulphur, Louisiana for over a hundred years. The first target to be shot at in the town was a large white powder cannonball that was used by the Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Today, Sulphur is home to several gun ranges and small businesses that offer firing range rentals and lessons on how to shoot firearms. There are also annual shooting competitions that take place at various locations in the town. The history of target shooting can be traced back to 1842 when Captain John Sibley of the US Navy set up his own target range in what is now known as Sulphur. Captain Sibley offered instruction on how to shoot pistols and rifles from his range, which soon became well-known throughout the area. In 1848, Major General John Cushman organized a military post called Fort Cushing near present day Sulphur. This location served as an artillery fortification and allowed soldiers access to fire large guns such as cannons and mortars. As part of this fortification, Cushman constructed two large target pits that could accommodate up to twenty shooters at a time. Over time, these targets were gradually replaced by larger guns like cannons or muskets until finally they were replaced by modern gunfire machines in 1870 when Fort Polk was established nearby. During World War I, Target Guns Incorporated (later known as G&G Sporting Goods) was founded in Sulphur by Wm Henson and Arthur Puckett with help from Major General Clarence Darrow who donated land for the company’srangeandammunition storeroom adjacentto Fort Polk Ammunition Storage Depot (APS). By 1918 G&G had opened several additional ranges across Louisiana including one at Shreveport where they operated out of storage until 1942 when they relocated their business operations into what is now known as Tulane University Building #1 on Wilkinson Avenue just south of downtown Sulphur (see map below). After World War II G&G Sporting Goods closed its doors but their legacy lives on through local member clubs who still hold annual events such as sanctioned shotgun shoots using vintage equipment dating back to the early 1900’s

In 1848, the earliest gun target in Sulphur was a cannonball that struck a tree near Wilkinson's Store. The store owner, James Wilkinson, attributed the shot to an Indian arrow. A second cannonball hit a small post next to the store in 1849 and caused some damage. In 1860, two cannons were installed at Fort Donelson in what is now Sulphur and shots were fired from both cannons at various targets throughout the town. One of these targets was a man on horseback who was challenged by several citizens and later killed with a single shot from one of the guns. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson ordered all Confederate soldiers in Louisiana must surrender their arms or be subject to martial law. This order caused many residents of Sulphur to arm themselves for protection. On October 9th, 1865, Confederate Major General Bowen Smith surrendered his forces at Fort Donelson after failing to gain entrance into Corinth via force through the fortifications. At this point, there were over 2,000 men surrendered by Confederate troops in Sulphur alone. In 1870-71 new guns were installed at Fort Donelson which increased gunfire around townard but no shooting took place on account of prohibition laws at that time governing alcoholic drinks within city limits On July 14th 1871 Unionists opened fire on militia forces under United States Colonel John Jourdan occupying parts of downtown Sulphur killing two people and wounding six others before retreating back into their homes On September 16th 1870 Unionists opened fire on what became known as "The Battle of Downtown" killing five people including three children and wounding twenty-eight others before withdrawing back into their homes On December 10th 1870 Unionists opened fire on an unarmed group of civilians resulting in three deaths and thirteen injuries prior to withdrawing back inside their homes
Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town located in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Sulphur Iron and Coal Company and the Sulphur Mining Company. The first European settlers in what is now Sulphur were French colonists who arrived in 1718. They named the area "Isabelle". In 1802, American forces burned down the old fort on the banks of the Mississippi River in order to clear land for plantations. The town was founded on August 29, 1810 by James Whitehead and other pioneers from Kentucky. Whitehead named his new settlement after Lord Cochrane's shipwrecked party that landed near present-day Gulfport on February 14, 1810. The first post office was established at Sulphur on October 5, 1810. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Sulphur. In 1840, sulfur mining began operations in nearby Biloxi as part of a large effort to develop oil resources around New Orleans (then known as Spanish Fort). Over time, this industry led to increased pollution and health problems due to emissions from smelters and mills; however, it also created some of Louisiana's most important economic landmarks including downtown Biloxi and Uptown New Orleans. The company merged with two other companies in 1865 to form United States Steel Corporation which still operates today as one of America's leading steelmakers (and also one of its largest employers). In 1971/1972 Hurricane Agnes destroyed much of what had been left of downtown Biloxi following heavy rains caused by Tropical Storm Agnes; however many structures from this period remain extant such as the Statehouse Annex Building which housed both state government offices and local grocery stores before Katrina struck; while all but one store within blocks of where it used to be stand demolished during those years following hurricane damage wrought by Katrina itself - an event that has still not been fully accounting for many homes lost during that time frame within Biloxi proper... In light of all that has occurred since then I feel it necessary once again write about what really happened during those tragically fateful days when life absolutely ground to a halt within our community... Aftermath: A people’s story Biloxi survived Hurricane Katrina relatively unscathed – except for significant flooding that damaged several blocks Downtown – thanks largely to early efforts made by municipal leaders like Mayor Mitch Landrieu and City Councilmember Marc Morial… After weekslong deliberations among city officials—including Morial—the decisions were made not just ensure open water flow into each block affected but also identify potential rebuild sites so businesses could reopen quickly…. However businesses closed their doors June 15th because they did not have insurance or receive prior notice from city officials about possible storm damage…. Some individuals who had evacuated their homes before landfall started returning after learning about possible flooding only found extensive destruction including entire homes gutted with foundation removed so families could rebuild them aboveground……[This] mirrored more widespread distrust across southeastern Louisiana towards governmental response times following several catastrophic events throughout 2006—chiefly Hurricane Rita.—Louisiana Today

Sulphur is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,631 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now forms Sulphur was first settled by French colonists in 1698 as the parish of Houma. The original name for the community was "Chocolate." In 1803, when Claiborne Parish merged with Jefferson Parish to form Louisiana, Chocolate became Sulphur and remained that way until 1868 when it changed its name to honor General James K. Polk's visit to New Orleans. After his death in 1846, Sulphur became a center for cotton culture and politics within south Louisiana before becoming a sleepy fishing village known mostly for its annual shrimp Festival held on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain. In 1901, Sulphur incorporated as an independent city and grew rapidly as an agricultural center with plantations producing sugar cane and other crops such as cotton and corn. However, during World War II much of this growth came to a halt as the city was bombed by American bombers; most residents were forced to flee their homes or live in secret shelters while their townsfolk were taken hostage or killed by Japanese forces retreating from Battle of Guadalcanal. By 1945 only 1% of the population remained in Sulphur after most had left for safer havens elsewhere in Louisiana or Mississippi due to bombings which hit many rural areas throughout those states also during that time period including Jackson County (in central Mississippi) where over 100% of all employment then took place within what are now known as "Quitman Air Force Base" facilities adjacent to Jackson County Airport - home today (2018) to about 3/4ths of Gulfport's employment followed immediately thereafter by less than 12/5ths locating within any major metropolitan area including Jackson County only 6 miles away from downtown Quitman AFB), making this one of largest concentration issues ever faced anywhere during WW2-48...At present day there remains little evidence remaining extant from pre-WWII community except perhaps plaques marking old boundaries
