There are also three churches - St John's Episcopal Church (founded in 1809), First Baptist Church (founded in 1812), and Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church (founded in 1830). The only store opened within the town limits during my time as mayor was Gerson's Hardware on Main Street which closed its doors in 2009 due to financial difficulties faced by many businesses throughout Jefferson Parish due to tax increases instituted by then-mayor Ray Nagin during his tenure as mayor from 2003 until his resignation effective December 1, 2006. In addition to its ecclesiastical institutions and stores, Sulphur also had some manufacturing operations conducted within its borders such as that of A&P Foods located on Veterans Boulevard just north of I-10 near Chalmette Mall before they relocated their entire business to Baton Rouge beginning in 2007; K Mart across Veterans Boulevard from Chalmette Mall before they reopened their doors again after being closed for several years prior; among others Additionally there were several restaurants operated within the confines of local bars/nightclubs which served up some typical Americana items like chicken Fried steak at Club Monaco while others specialized more specifically like Mama Juana's BBQ restaurant serving up Portugese style cuisine cooked over an open fire pit outside along Veteran Boulevard near Metairie Mall which ceased operations following Hurricane Katrina but reopened shortly thereafter under new ownership starting with reopening day October 15th 2006 THANKSGIVING Evelyn's Place on Veterans Boulevard opposite Chalmette Mall that closed its doors after sustaining extensive damage from Katrina but reopened soon thereafter under new ownership) . Overall these types of businesses continue to operate despite commodity prices remaining low given widespread devastation wrought throughout much south central Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina although some smaller operations have disappeared altogether because their owners could not afford post-disaster expenses associated with repairing/repaired infrastructure or taking back existing customers who had moved away because they did not believe that New Orleans would be rebuilt sufficiently according to initial predictions By2009 however all but four out of fifty five original retail establishments operating within municipally controlled boundaries prior to Katrina have either been restored or rebranded since then if not completely rehabilitated including most notably Pee Wee's Pizza which reopened early September2007 less than one year after landfall having sustained minimal damage - this operation becoming known as "Newburgh" inside City Limits later constituting what has been characterized locally as "the last stand" against Rebuilding efforts) . Overall I believe that while this community has experienced significant challenges both good and bad during my time as Mayor over nine years including various hurricanes (Katrina included) it remains resilient especially given how many people live hereabouts &&&&&&&&&&&&&&
