Sulphur, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 23,902 at the 2010 census. Sulphur is the seat of Jeff Davis Parish and part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. It is located on the Gulf coast of Louisiana about 25 miles (40 km) north-northwest of New Orleans and 10 miles (16 km) south-southwest of Baton Rouge. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Sulphur were Baptist missionaries who arrived in 1786. The town was named after General James Wilkinson's military expedition against Native Americans in 1803. At that time Wilkinson's force included 1,200 men and women under Captain John DeLorme; they burned most of the Village on April 3rd as they made their way to Fort St. Philip on Lake Pontchartrain In 1836, Sulphur was renamed for General Lafayette because he had been Military Governor of New Orleans at that point during the US Civil War. General Lafayette served as Commandant at Fort Jackson from 1861 until his death in 1865 – making him one of only three people to serve in both Confederate and Union forces during the war On July 4th 1870, Sulphur became a parish withinJefferson Parish when it was created from parts of Rapides and Lafourche parishes . In 1912 it annexed part of Crowley County ; this annexation gave it its present name According to the 2000 census, there were 24,502 people living in Sulphur with 12% African American ancestry or less than one percent black: 9% Hispanic or Latino; 2% white non-Hispanic residents; 98% French Canadian residents or less than one percent white non-Hispanic residents

Sulphur, Louisiana (population: 31,000) is located in the southeastern corner of the United States. It is bordered by Texas on the north and east, Arkansas on the south, Mississippi on the west and Louisiana on the northwest. The area that comprises Sulphur was first settled by Native Americans around 900 AD. The first Europeans to visit Sulphur were French traders in 1699-1800. In 1718, a large expedition led by General James K. Polk explored and mapped much of what is now southeast Louisiana. On July 4th of that year, Spain ceded Florida to America and with it all rights to present day Orleans Parish including Sulphur Creek (now known as Wilkinson Creek). In 1803, recognition was given to New Orleans as the capital of America following its merger with Mexican City In 1806 Governor Claiborne Pell commissioned Captain John Smith to explore what are now central and eastern Louisiana for white settlement. Because there were no Indian settlements in this area at that time, Smith's exploration did not lead to any new settlements being established in what became Sulphur Parish until after his death in 1821 when he bequeathed some land heretofore unoccupied to his nephew John Cushing who took up the cause of white settlement near modernday Baton Rouge. By 1830 over 1/3rd of present day Sulphur had been developed as a town with a population of 10 people only! The first school built in Sulphur was an adobe building which still stands today on State Street just outside of town limits. A second school was built shortly thereafter but it burned down in 1860 while also serving as a courthouse for about 15 years! A third school building was erected soon afterward but it too burned down during an electrical storm in 1888! The last school building constructed within town limits before 1900 was also destroyed during an electrical storm but it reopened later that same year as a Masonic Lodge! On November 3rd 1870 Hurricane Andrew struck much of southern West Gulf Coalfield leaving entire areas along Gulf Coast without power for many days afterwards due largely to damage caused by winds and waves! This event has been called one of history's worst natural disasters! Aftermath included significant loss or destruction both physically and emotionally across most portions impacted including parts adjacent to modern day Sulphur where Prior Lake lies today just offshore from shoreline completely surrounded by hurricane damage!! As result 100% percentof all homes remaining standing throughoutAndrews Impact Zone are either frame or frame-only homes!!! Overall more than 2400 Properties resulteddamage resultingin nearly $2 Billion worth total destruction!!! Today approximately 50%of all homes remaining within Andrews Impact Zone are Frame Only!!!!
Sulphur was founded in 1713 by Pierre-André Le Moyne, Sieur de La Salle. The town was named after the Sulpher River, which emptied into the Mississippi River near the town's original site. The first post office in Sulphur was established in 1753. In 1802, a canal was constructed through Sulphur and other towns in Lafourche Parish to improve transportation between the river and points west. The canal became known as the Canal du Nord (Canal of North). In 1862, Sulphur became an independent parish within Lafourche Parish. In 1898, a fire destroyed much of downtown Sulphur and many of its buildings including the courthouse and jail. The town recovered quickly and returned to its former status by 1907. A new courthouse was built in 1928 and renamed for Judge Augustus Waugh Courthouse Annex on Elm Street. In 1968, due to increasing population growth, a new city hall was constructed on Union Boulevard with additions including a public square and library addition in 1925. That same year, Hurricane Betsy damaged or destroyed most of downtown Sulphur along with several other businesses before striking Louisiana mainland early that evening; as a result of this storm damage and ensuing flooding much parts of southern Lafourche Parish were uninhabitable for weeks afterwards. As part of FEMA's Complex Damage Reduction Program announced during President Lyndon B Johnson's State of the Union Address on January 20th 1969, local officials began repairs to some structures which had been lost or destroyed during Betsy while also creating incentives for rebuilding which resulted in more than 3200 homes being rebuilt or renovated over 4 years following Betsy cleanup operations
