Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population of Sulphur was 562 at the 2010 census. Sulphur is part of the Baton Rouge-Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Sulphur begins with the settlement of French colonists in present day Sulphur in 1729. It was originally called "New Orléans" and was one of the original seven founding parish municipalities inJefferson Parish. In 1803, Sulphur was incorporated as a village after being chosen as the site for an courthouse by a vote of its citizens. In 1815, followingthe American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E Price attacked and destroyed Union General Nathaniel Banks' command center at New Orleans and this event helped spur what became known as the "Sulpher Revolution". Afterward, some members of Price's army deserted to join forces with General Ulysses S Grant's Union army and founded the city's first black regiment—the 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment—in 1865. That same year saw also First Baptist Church built on present day State Street in downtown Sulphur (later renamed Boulevard d'Orleans). From 1802 until it merged into neighboring Ascension Parish in 1907, Sulpher had its own school board which operated under separate rules from those governing Ascension Parish schools; that changed when suspension began to be imposed on all students within Jefferson Parish for failure to attend any parochial school during term times (a practice that continued through Reconstruction). On January 1, 1896 nearly all residents left for unknown reasons when Ascension County annexed territory from Jefferson Parish. A new school board was appointed and quickly established grades K-12th gradeindersof seventh through twelfth grades within Ascension Parish Schools before reopening firehouse No. 2 on Roosevelt Avenue (now Tulane University Drive) adjacent to present day Waterfront Parkette business district just east of US 190 north about midway between Old Spanish Trail Road/Rte 452 west & Airport Rd., then just southwest corner next curve go W on Airport Rd., now I-10 exit Rt 460E about 3 miles due W on I-10 near Hammonds Ford Bridge over Bayou Lafourche River
