The community is located on the banks of the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge and has developed around riverboats that dock there for trade with points further upriver such as New Orleans. Manufacturing began in the early twentieth century with woodworking and boatbuilding being some of the most prominent industries until surpassed by papermaking during World War II which left Sulphur with only agriculture as an industry until recent times When oil production began to increase due to hydraulic fracturing in Texas in 2009 jobs started to flow back into town including manufacturing associated with Fracking chemicals used during fracking Gulf Coast states have seen many companies relocate their headquarters out west over time because tax breaks are becoming less available here

This event helped solidify industry ties between Sulphur and New Orleans as well as other nearby cities such as Lafayette and Baton Rouge
