Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,623 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bossier City metropolitan area. Sulphur is named after Sulphur Springs on the Mississippi River. The first mention of sulfur in Louisiana comes from site surveys made by the USGS in 1871 and 1872 as part of their survey of American river systems. The discovery of oil reserves near Sulphur Springs led to an increase in business for local businesses and developers and development around the SPRINGS AREA by 1926 when it was annexed into Sulphur Township from Stonington Township. In 1929, a gas pipeline was built from Montrose to Sulphur which increased production at the sulphide mine until it closed in 1978 due to low natural gas prices. In 1984, a new refinery opened up that helped increase exports to Europe and Asia while also creating jobs within the community. In 2000-2001, a new $101 million dollar project called "New refining plant – Gulf Coast" replaced an older plant that had been shutting down for years with better efficiency and more environmentally friendly practices than its predecessor. The project has brought many jobs and economic development to the town since it began operations with plans to bring jobs back online every two years through 2020 if all goes according to plan

Sulphur was founded by wealthy Frenchmen in 1795 as a trading post on the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and Mobile. In 1836, it became the seat of government for all of New Orleans when Jackson moved his capital to that city from Baton Rouge. In 1857, Sulphur incorporated as a village and continued to be governed by its municipal officials until 1898, when it became an unincorporated community under state jurisdiction. On November 3rd, 1898 - one hundred years after its founding - Sulphur received its own charter from the State of Louisiana to become an independent municipality within Jefferson Parish with full civil and political rights and powers. The original site of Sulphur is now a ghost town located overgrown on high ground just outside of downtown New Orleans.

In 1970, Sulphur was designated as an unincorporated community within Jefferson Parish near New Orleans due to its small size and lack of commercial resources.
