A post office was established at Sulphur in 1870 and remained active until it closed in 1903. The only other structure within present-day Sulphur boundaries was a blacksmith shop built by Methodist Episcopal Church members Solomon Hodge and James Fenton around 1895-1896 for repair work on their farmsteads several miles north of town. In 1906, when New Orleans City Limits were created and Rapides Parish became one section of that city limits, Sulpher's ZIP code became 71201; however local businesses continued to use their original saloons mailing addresses even though they no longer sold liquor to customers inside city limits! In 1920/1921 LaPorte County was created from part of Rapides Parish; as a result of this change most of southern Lafourche Parish also came under New Orleans City Limits jurisdiction including part of what is now called Tulane County east of I-10 & south of Baton Rouge Avenue - so much for rural Louisiana!
