In that year, Sulphur also became home to America's first all-electric motor car race when Chrysler donated an electric roadsweeper nicknamed Old Sparky to race against Ford Model T cars at Tulane University's Pershing Park Racetrack over three days beginning October 15th . Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,856 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Sulphur Springs in Alabama. Sulphur Springs was a trading post on the Tombigbee River that served as a crossroads for travelers between Mobile and Baton Rouge. The post was abandoned in 1824 and never regained its importance until it was resurrected as Sulphur, LA in 1902. The first settlement in what is now Sulphur, LA was made up of families who migrated from Tennessee during the early 1800s. They were followed by other pioneer families who settled around 1825-1830. By 1840 there were over 50 families living in what is today Sulphur. By 1860 there were only 7 residents remaining and by 1870 the population had dwindled to 2 people. In 1892, when Gulf Oil Corporation began production at nearby Rigby Field, many of the early settlers moved to live near the new refinery and company town proper (now Midtown). In 1914-1915 about 60% of all local jobs went to Gulf employees; however, due to World War I production constraints oil prices fell sharply and this led to a decline in business that resumed after Prohibition ended in 1920. In 1930-1931 some 575 people lived in what is now Sulphur; however this number decreased following incorporation of neighboring towns Kenedyville and Mayfield into Jefferson Parish less than two years later (Mayfield still remains an independent municipality). Reid's interests included lumber, cotton, oil production and shipping. He donated land for a university and built a school and residences on the east side of town. In 1915, Sulphur incorporated as an independent city with a population of around 50 residents. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1920s due to World War II-era production at nearby Beaumont Shipbuilding Company (BSC). During the war, thousands of workers moved into Sulphur from other parts of Louisiana to help boost local economy; many families remained in the town until their deaths in the late 21st century.
