Slidell, Louisiana is a small town located in the swamps of south Louisiana. It has been a commercial center for fishing and commerce since the 1830s. Slidell is a small town in the parish of Slidell, Louisiana. The population was 1,504 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is bordered by Bayou Teche to the north and east, Alexandria to the south and west, and Jefferson Parish to the northwest. The name Slidell comes from "Scillel," a Native American word meaning "place where cotton grows." The first settler in what is now Slidell was John Daughtry in 1811. Daughtry's brother-in-law, James Caldwell, patented land for cattle ranching around what are now Slaughter Road and Canal Street. In 1829, J.D. Caldwell sold his interest in this business to Andrew Jackson for $2,000 cash. By 1830, Sladell had an inn which served as a post office from 1836 until 1861 when it closed due to lack of mail service along the coastlines then being developed by New Orleans businessmen such as John Haughton & Co.. In 1851 construction began on an canal throughslake Bayou Teche linking Baton Rouge with New Orleans via Lake Pontchartrain; this project was completed two years later (1854). This canal allowed easier shipping between New Orleans and Pointe Coupee Island; also it facilitated sugarcane shipments from Louisiana downriver to Baton Rouge. Growth in Slidell during this time led to its incorporation as a city on May 15th of 1865 by act of Congress following approval by Louisiana's General Assembly that year...Slidell became one of twenty cities within present day Lafayette Parish after taking advantage of annexation proceedings initiated by Jefferson Parishes following their cession as part of French Louisiana on November 16th 1865...When Lafayette Parish seceded from statehood on February 9th 1870 slidell continued under Confederate government control until November 4th 1870 when Union forces arrived....slideLL continued under Federal rule untilApril 11th 1871 when all Confederate forces surrendered including most City Officials including Mayor Charles Wirtz who became US Marshal for District 5 headquartered herefromuntilMarch 3rd 1893 when he resigned effective date unknown because he had married into Confederate family...Since then no official records have been kept pertaining either to residents or businesses within SlidelL other than some photos taken before recent fires which destroyed much evidence related thereto...It should be noted that not only were unofficial records destroyed but many items which may have been used TO document life in SlidelL such as old photographs or even oral histories may never be recovered again given these current conditions! The history of Slidell can be traced back over 150 years ago when pioneers inhabited what is today Slidell Harbor area near present day Canal Street/SladeLL Inn/Canal Dr., making it one of just seven settlements within present day Lafourche Parish...John Daughtry established himself in what would become Slideill Harbor around 1800 while others followed suit throughout late 19th century bringing produce such as cotton etc.. By 1830s there were at least eight residences associated with early settlers living off lowland swamps adjacent docks facing salt marsh eastward whence they harvested shrimp caught incidentally during dry season

However, slidell's growth came at a cost; it lost its status as a major city after Reconstruction ended and its factories closed down or were converted into warehouses or other businesses unrelated to manufacturing. During World War I, Slidell played host to naval officers' training exercises off shore until 1915 when they moved ashore at Naval Air Station New Orleans. After that activity ceased there remained no regular military presence in or around slidell for many years until World War II when it again resumed with some new construction but most notably saw active duty defense of New Orleans against Japanese forces during WWII
