Slidell, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in east-central Louisiana. The population was 1,818 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The Slidell Rifle Club was first organized on April 25, 1892 in Slidell by Elisha Cook and Abram Hoskins. The club met at the home of Hemanus Sutherlin until 1893 when it moved to a barn on High Street. On October 15, 1893, Captain John Purdy of the U.S. Marines arrived in Slidell and introduced himself as “the new sheriff of Parish Jefferson” which caused excitement because no one had ever heard of him before. That same year Isaac Augustus French founded an agricultural cooperative called "The Frenchman" with 5 acres (2 hectares) of land around what is now known as Main Street and Post Road in Slidell. French donated this land to the town for use as a rifle range or shooting ground from where muzzleloader shots could be fired over 100 yards without hitting anything else in town or outside its walls; he also provided considerable financial assistance to help promote gun safety through his cooperative. In 1895 two local men were killed while hunting deer on property adjacent to current day Main Street between Highway 9 and 10A: Hiram Thompson and George Washington Hackney both shot at game they believed was trying to run away but their rifles misfired causing them both death instantly from close range gunshot wounds that entered through closed eyelids which would have been lethal if not for effective hands-and-face protection methods then currently available including face shields made from hard plastic sheeting stretched overlasses or similar devices affixed directly over open eyes which kept blood out while firing live rounds into human skulls providing permanent partial or total facial coverage againstbullet injuries seeking revenge cowardly premeditated assassinations terrorizing all who dared cross their path during many Bloody Thursday's throughout America's Old South during those days prior to World War I when civilized society virtually forgot about such barbaric practices taking place right under our noses!
