The town originally consisted of just a few hundred residents and was known as "The Settlement." The first school in Slidell was built in 1872 and the first post office opened in 1875. By 1907, Slidell had become one of the largest towns in Louisiana Beach Parish. In 1915, Slidell's population had reached 9,000 and it became an incorporated city. The population grew even more rapidly during World War II, when Slidell became one of the most important military production centers in Louisiana. During that time, slidell also became home to two Air Force bases and numerous munitions plants. However, by 1960s slidell's economy had slumped and its population only numbered around 1,000 people. However, things began to change for Sliprell after they developed ear plugs as a way to reduce noise pollution during war times. This initial group included some of the originalslidell fathers such as Pierre Lafitte (1806-1849), Jean Lafitte (1793-1875), Antoine Duguid (1795-1872), Jean Baptiste Chouteau(1784-1856)and others who were instrumental in helping develop this fledgling community into one that would influence neighboring towns throughout southern Louisiana for many years to come. The early settlement period saw great social upheaval due largely to factors such as poverty and political instability in France during these difficult times; however some key players including Father Lachaise – founder of Sainte Claire de la Salle Seminary – managed to keep things together despite these challenges . In 1851 Captain Félix Lachance landed his family at what is today Slidell creek after leaving Mobile Bayou with his brother John & brothers François & Michel Lacroix on board USS Constitution under then Commandant James Cook’s command - setting off what would become one of America’s earliest naval assaults against Confederate forces operating out of New Orleans Harbor .
