Slidell was founded in 1837 by Frenchmen Pierre-André Slade and Nicholas-Jacques Demaret as a small trading post on the Iberian Peninsula near present day Slidell, Louisiana (now an unincorporated community). A post office was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The first white child born in Slidell was Anna Elizabeth Reid who was born December 12th 1840 to James Reid and his wife Catharine (née Boyd) Reid at their home on Bank Street just outside of town limits then known as “Old Town” today’s Slidell Naval Air Station which lies just east of town limits across Bayou Teche from where AnnaElizabeth would later be baptized into Christianity on April 4th 1841 at age 6 months old with parents Dr James Reid and Mrs Catharine Boyd serving as sponsors.) Anna Elizabeth would grow up to become an accomplished singer/songwriter/pianist/keyboardist whose music has been featured throughout her life both locally hereabouts & internationally including recordings for CD by USFV Productions along w/a number of other local artists LIVE broadcast live statewide thru satellite from our beautiful new facility adjacent to USFV Stadium also home to Our Lady Of The Lake Parish School District #1 There are several interesting stories connected with this time period or early portion thereof that include one such event which took place 9 years prior to when AnnaElizabeth met her future husband Dr Richard Huntley who had been living temporarily with his family someplace north of Mobile Alabama while he pursued a doctoral degree from American University thereby becoming one step closer towards achieving his goal of becoming a doctor like his father had done – however only after long hard work & many hundreds more dollars worth OF WORDLY MONEY! Richard Huntley would eventually settle down permanently back East & marry Anna Elizabeth (née Boyd) whom he had met while still attending American University– they would have 3 children together before she died suddenly aged 58yrs old during childbirth after being married for over 50yrs total!!! In fact what bond these 2 individuals shared beyond simply being two people deeply interested in each other may never be fully understood however it is safe to say they truly loved each other deeply!! At that time, Slidell served as a base for trading with Native Americans and as an important transportation stop on the lower Mississippi River. The town's first store opened in 1762 and its first Post Office was established in 1768. By 1802, Slidell had become a busy commercial center due to its strategic location on the lower Mississippi River and its easy access to trade with Native Americans. The town also developed into a political hub due to its role as a rendezvous point for military campaigns against Mexico and France during the Mexican-American War. In 1810, Slidell became one of five towns west of New Orleans designated as provisional capital of Louisiana under President James K Polk's efforts to establish statewide rule following Texas' annexation into Mexico). During Reconstruction following Reconstructionism's failure in America following World War II, Slidingell experienced significant demographic change with African Americans becoming most numerous while whites retreated into poverty and neglect. However, since 2000s redevelopment has led to new businesses opening up within the old warehouses which have been turned into mixed use buildings including residential units and commercial corridors
