Slidell is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,313 at the 2000 census. It is the third-largest community in Jefferson Parish and the second largest of its kind in Louisiana. Slidell's waterways include the St. John River and Bayou Lafourche. The first Europeans to explore what is now Slidell were Frenchmen Jean Lafitte and his brother Pierre de la Salle. Lafitte founded a trading post here in 1699 on the present day side of Bayou Lafourche from where he operated for twenty years before moving to New Orleans. In 1711, General Robert E parade led a military expedition against Spanish Fort San Felipe de Guatemala on the present day site of Slidell after capturing Baton Rouge (site of Thibodaux). The fort was destroyed by an American force under George Rogers Clark on October 20, 1796." In 1803, Edward Jarratt purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) along Bayou Lafourche from La Salle for $500 per acre ($26 million today). This area became known as "Jarratt's Landing". In 1810, Jarratt built a warehouse and store complex at what is now Fourth Street which still stands today and served as the main business center for early settlers in this area. In 1814, Captain James Kenedy established an ironworks at Jarratt's Landing which produced nails used throughout America until1860 when these operations were transferred to New Orleans.. The first school in Slidell opened in 1824 with six students taught by Mrs. Jane Addams from Illinois.. By 1830 there were sixty students taught by Mrs Addams with four teachers teaching math, science and English language arts.. Sliderill had one newspaper for two years before it folded due to lack of funding .. A Methodist church was organized in 1830 with Rev Rufus King serving as pastor.. The new church building was constructed between 1840-1850 using slave labor including ten women who worked eighteen hours daily sewing curtains for services while four men graded each row of windowsills…. during Reconstruction Slidell experienced some violence with Ku Klux Klan activity increasing until 1865 when they moved out after being fined $1 thousand per night….. following World War II most businesses closed but some reopened such as Goudreau Chevrolet etcetera…………… current population 8300

Slidell is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Slidell is located on the mouth of the Mississippi River and on its eastern border with Orleans Parish. The village was named for James Slidell, a soldier in the American Revolution who fought against British forces. In 1805, John Crain, who had been born in Slidell and owned land near present-day Slidell Street and Canal Street, donated all of his property to the town in memory of his father-in-law, Alexander Crain Sr., also from Slidell. At first it was just a frontier settlement with no infrastructure or school; residents gathered around fires to cook food over open pits during wintertime. However, by 1810 Slidell had an academy (later renamed LSU) and two churches (one Congregational). By 1830s many homes were built including what is now LSU's Main House which served as both a courthouse and jail before being destroyed in an 1871 fire. The early economy centered around fishing and slavery until railroads arrived after World War I when oil discoveries began to be made in nearby Baton Rouge and Lake Charles; this led to new industries such as shipbuilding and manufacturing that remain important today. Slavery ended following Reconstruction in America; however, some freedmen continued working on plantations until they were finally emancipated in 1865. The post-Civil War period saw rapid growth for Slipknotl with businesses opening up all along Interstate 10 near Baton Rouge while industry declined elsewhere due to competition from foreign sources such as Mexico and China.; however military service brought many new residents into the town during World War II but by 1945 most desirable jobs had moved away due to wartime production restrictionsimposed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.; slidellan's heyday came again during the late 1940s through 1950s when automobile manufacturing became more significant then other industries because it required lots of space inside factories for assembly lines; however this prosperity stopped abruptly because of increased crime rates which causedSlidell's nickname "Murderville".
