The name Slidell comes from a Native American word meaning "place where two rivers meet." The first settlers were Frenchmen who arrived in 1718 and Named the community after Jean-Baptiste de Slaidere, an officer with the French colony of Acadia (present day Nova Scotia). In 1814, Captain James Ketchum named Slidell after Rear Admiral John Slidell of U.S. Navy's Squadron Vicksburg that had landed there on December 15th with his squadron to take possession of what was then known as Baton Rouge Parish and its dependencies including Slidell Island. In 1836, General Claiborne Jackson moved his headquarters from New Orleans to Slidell and ordered all military stores and materiel brought over from New Orleans be destroyed so as not to subject Louisiana's troops to possible seizure by Federal authorities at any time during or after the civil war. When President Andrew Johnson took office in 1865, he determined that all former Confederate forces must leave Louisiana before reconstruction could begin; this caused many Slidell residents to migrate permanently to other parts of the state during this time period including Austin and Shreveport. Slidell experienced significant growth following World War II when the Army Air Forces used it as a training base for pilots cadet training at nearby Drew Air Force Base; afterwards it became an important commercial center due to its location on I-10 near Baton Rouge Airport which served as both an industrial center for aluminum production but also served as a transportation hub connecting different areas within New Orleans metropolitan area with points north and south along I-10.
