In 1835, Slidell became part of Orleans Parish and formed its own government with a mayor and fifteen council members under a General Assembly system similar to that used by New Orleans until it disbanded in 1848. Afterward, Slidell slowly lost population due to natural disasters such as hurricanes (1893, 1915) and smallpox outbreaks (1924). However, it regained some residents during World War II when coastal communities along Louisiana's Gulf Coast were attacked by Japanese submarines; many Slidellians served in connection with this effort. Slidell experienced another rapid growth following Hurricane Katrina which destroyed much of its downtown business district on August 29th 2005 causing over $40 million worth of damage according to FEMA statistics In 2006, voter approval for annexation into Jefferson Parish followed quickly after neighboring towns expressed concerns about their ability to handle an overwhelming influx of new residents who would not be able to integrate into their cultures or municipal services
