On December 3rd 1805 John Quincy Adams appointed Captain David Dixon as Postmaster at Slidell; he served until February 14th 1812 when he resigned because of ill health Captain Dixon was replaced by Isaac Brock who served until January 25th 1815 when he resigned due to illness Captain Dixon's replacement was William Broussard who served from May 25th 1815 to October 26th 1819 and then resigned due to ill health Lieutenant Governor Richard Cushman took over on October 26th and continued serving until March 4th 1830 when he resigned because of political differences with President Andrew Jackson Lieutenant Governor Cushman's successor was Samuel Gist who served from April 8th 1830 to December 15th 1830 when he resigned because of health problems Commodore George Hernandt Hawkins relieved Commodore Hawkins on December 15 th 1830 and succeeded him as lieutenant governor Fenton Bourgoyne took over as lieutenant governor on January 6 th 1861 and continued serving until July 20 th 1865 when he resigned because unbearable workload caused by Civil War related expenses
