Slidell, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Slidell is one of the oldest towns in New Orleans and has been around since 1784. The town was named for General John Slidell, who fought in the American Revolution. The first settlers to the area were French Canadians who arrived in 1784. In 1804, a group of Americans founded what would become Slidell as a small community on Bayou Teche adjacent to present-day Jefferson Parish. In 1836, Slidell became an incorporated village with a meeting house and Wade Street as its main commercial thoroughfare. A naturaliste (nature writer) by the name of Pierre Laclau moved to Slideland from Metairie in 1838 and started publishing La Terre d'Isabelle (The Land of Isabelle). His work stimulated early settlement by European Americans and helped spur development around Bayou Teche which served as a water supply for Slideland until it was drained during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In 1840s two brothers - James Waddell and Samuel Hogg - developed a flour mill on Bayou Teche near present-day Slidell while their father operated an agricultural business nearby acrossbayou from where slidell now stands From 1850 until 1860 when New Orleans public schools were established all children living within 500 feet of school were required to attend; this represented an important step forward for education in New Orleans given that many families could not afford private schools . By 1870 only 10% of households had access to plumbing but over 80% had telephone service . By 1910 only 5% lived below poverty line while more than 60% possessed automobiles By 1930 most residents had retired or leftSlidell altogether due to competition from other major city centers like Baton Rouge and Stroudsburg . The land that now Slidell was first settled by French colonists in 1699 and named for Gilles de Slidell (died 1724), a Huguenot trader who had arrived in Louisiana during King James II's Duchy of Bourbon Restoration. In 1807, after the Mexican-American War, Texas claimedslatell as part of its annexation into Mexico. As part of this claim, Texas erected a temporary boundary fence along modern Interstate 10 near Slidell to delineate what Mexico considered its new territory east of Red River Parish. In 1868, Congress passed an act entitled "An Act to organize and establish a government for all or any portion of Texas," which designated Slidell as the seat of government for all Texan areas east of Red River Parish including those within present-day Slidell Parish. On July 1, 1870 - one day after Ulysses S. Grant became President - US Senator John Sherman announced his candidacy for president on behalf of Texans residing eastof Red River Parish; he won with 61% of the vote against 36% given to incumbent Andrew Johnson. In 1879 Slidell elected its first mayor – Aimer Fenton – who served until 1902 when Mayor Isaac Powell took office following disputed voting results in an election organized by Governor John Bogue III based on party lines rather than individual qualifications or performance ratings from city officials themselves (powell had been elected mayoralty twice before but no longer held office due to term limits). The town was founded in 1872 by slaves from present-day Mobile, Alabama and it became part of Rapides Parish in 1877. In 1927, Slidell absorbed the villages of Carondelet and Haughton into its boundaries. The first inhabitants of what would become Slidell were Native American descendant settlers who arrived during the early 18th century according to French records. They named their community Ixelles meaning "Island" because they had never seen an island before, only coastal areas with mangroves and tidal marshes. By 1785, Englishman James Robertson had landed at Ixelles with his family after sailing from North Carolina on HMS Bounty. He built a house there that still stands today as a reminder of his visit and also remains one of the most notable landmarks in Slidell's history. Robertson's descendants continued to live in Ixelles until about 1800 when they relocated to New Orleans due to increasing pressure from British forces occupying Mobile Bayou during the days leading up to America's independence from Great Britain. In 1802, following America's victory over France in la Guerre des Lignes (the War of 1812), General Andrew Jackson appointed John Stevens as territorial governor for Louisiana Territory which included all present day Mississippi except for parts west of Jackson River (now Webster County).
