In 1895, two brothers named Wirtz erected the world’s second gun safe at 4500 Riverside Drive in Slidell. This safe had an 80-inch depth by 20 inches width by 24 inches height and weighed 450 pounds; it was also unusual in that it featured an internal lock system to protect firearms from theft or loss during transit. Slidell experienced several natural disasters during the late 1800s including Hurricane Betsy which destroyed many homes in 1865, Hurricane Celia which struck Orleans Parish in 1886, and Hurricane Florence which struck Louisiana on September 14, 2017. However, none of these catastrophes caused any damage to local gun safes nor did they cause any loss or destruction to firearms stored inside them.

Slidell, Louisiana is a town located in the parish of Slidell, La. The population was 2,213 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest parish in Louisiana and is one of the youngest towns in America. Sligo-Lafayette County was founded by French colonists on July 4, 1803 as part of la Nouvelle-Orléans Parish. On December 3, 1818, slidell became independent from Lafayettes Parish when it seceded to form its own government. The first mayor of slidell was John Ladd. In 1861, Slidell annexed the smaller communities of New Iberia and Mobile Bayou until it had a total population of 8,813 residents. After Hurricane Katrina struck southern Louisiana on August 29th 2005 and destroyed much property there, Slidell legislativewoman Laura Richards unsuccessfully proposed that Slidell become an official community established to help rebuild post-Katrina areas. This effort failed but slidll has since made some strides to becoming more self-sufficient both economically and socially with its own governing body called "The Municipality".
