Slidell is located on the Mississippi River and its tributaries. It is bordered by Lake Pontchartrain to the east and west, Hammondsport to the north and south, and Lafayette to the southwest. Slidell was founded in 1814 as a trading post by General Wofford Scott during his military campaigns against French forces in what is now Louisiana. The post became a landing stage for goods coming downriver from Texas before becoming an important commercial center after France ceded its colony to America in 1802. After being burned by Native Americans in 1837, Slidell was rebuilt with public funds and became one of America's most prosperous towns early in the 19th century. In 1848 it became one of four settlements within present-day Jefferson Parish when that parish was created from parts of Lafourche Parish and St Tammany Parish. During World War II, Slidell played an important role as a logistics hub for V-2 launch sites located throughout southern Louisiana due to its location on both banks of the river near missile factories run by Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC). The town also hosted major airfields used during that war including Airacobra Field (later renamed Hill Air Force Base), which served as headquarters for VIII Corps/ Seventeenth Army; Gunnery Park; and Aircraft Factory No. 1 (AFCON 1) which manufactured American B-25 bombers during World War II. In recent years Slider has experienced significant economic decline due to several factors including loss of industry jobs associated with oil production beginning in 2002; Hurricane Katrina damage to homes and businesses; reductions in federal assistance granted to New Orleans since Katrina made available elsewhere; declines in tourist attendance because of changes related to energy prices brought about bythe shale gas revolution; competition from other forms of economy such as online shopping or services along highways outside New Orleans

The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1861 but rebuilt within two years with slave labor using funds provided by President James K. Polk. The town prospered due to its position as a transportation hub on the Mississippi River and its agricultural production including cotton, corn, sugar cane, rice and other crops until the early 20th century when it lost its status as a center of trade because of Americanization policies implemented during World War I and II.
