In 1876, Patrick J. Rooney patented a process for making firearm lube which became known as "Rougier's Process". This paste was then applied to firearms by rubbing it between hands or using an old cloth soaked in the mixture. In 1907, John P. Hougan patented a Method of Lubricating Firearms which became known as Hougan's Method. It involved immersing guns in warm kerosene until the grease had penetrated all the metal parts and was present on all surfaces (except the internals). The procedure was repeated several times until all greases were used up. This allowed cleaning and troubleshooting of firearms without having to remove them entirely

In 1941, during World War II, Slidell played an important role in supplying fuel for both naval vessels moored off New Orleans Harbor and for planes flying over France during Operation Overlord. Afterward, it lost some of its importance as a commercial center but has slowly regained some stature as home to many businesses including energy companies such as SunocoPhillips oil refinery which operates across from downtown on Bayou Lafitte Boulevard - one of only two US oil refineries left operating after Hurricane Katrina - along with local paper plants (the largest being JT Paper Products), manufacturing companies like Outlaw Motorcycle Doo Wop Inc., Hammond Manufacturing Company (now Alliant Energy), Clearwater Marine Industries Ltd., Seafarers Unlimited Corporation, among others since 2009 when BP acquired all remaining assets from JT Paper Products parent company JTI plc.; Slidell also houses many federal offices located within walking distance such as US Attorney's Office & Eastern District Court Building just east of downtown on Frenchman Street while DOJ's Civil Rights Division is located adjacent to Frédéric Chopin High School across Bayou Lafitte Boulevard from downtown on Edwards Avenue - part of what is now called Park Row district - which housed much of Beaumont/Port Arthur business before it moved uptown into Prudential Plaza; Many notable athletes have come through this town such as American football player Joe Gibbs Sr., world champion runner Usain Bolt or track coach César Arnaldo Bickelman who coached numerous Olympic gold medalists including Usain Bolt himself whose father Jamaal set up shop here starting out as Simply Canvas Printing back in 1975 before becoming manager/president at simplyprintingincorporated (now printingcoastalsystemsInc.) later renamed simplyprinting inc.(BP)

The town also offers many cultural attractions such as a summer music festival and blues museum which are popular with tourists.
