Slidell is a small town in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in Louisiana. It was founded by French colonists in 1763 as a trading post on the Red River. The name "Slidell" comes from the Choctaw word "sliw-i-lay," meaning "place of water." In 1815, Slidell became part of what is now Orleans Parish and it remained an agricultural center until World War II when manufacturing began to take hold. Slidell's economy has been characterized by its heavy reliance on agriculture and fishing for its food supply; however, there are several service industries that have arisen over time including software development and information technology services. In recent years, Slidell has experienced growth in alternative recreation such as horseback riding, biking, playing children's games on the local open field playgrounds, and swimming in its two main bodies of water: The Slider Creek Watershed Park and Bayou Lafourche which make up much ofslidell's downtown core. The first European settlement in what is now Slidell occurred around 1685 when Captain Pierre Le Moyne explored present-day Rapides Parish while looking for new land to purchase from the native nations he claimed as his own lands during France's colony period (1699–1765). He named his new land Saint Landry after Archbishop Louis de Lorette who had served as governor of New Orleans between 1701–1712 under King Louis XIV. At this time most Acadian settlers were located along either the Mississippi or Great Lakes rivers with smaller numbers settled near Baton Rouge and Natchitoches (now Shreveport). Captain Le Moyne left several hundred Frenchmen behind him when he discovered Louisiana about September 3rd 1685 after sailing downriver from Biloxi Harbor eastward towards Mobile Bay where he had been directed by Rear Admiral René Lavoie de Turennes who commanded forces stationed at Saint contente on Lake Michigan. His mission was to explore all possible routes leading to New Orleans through Canada before returning home to report back to Father Jacques Marquette who would direct further exploration into North America should Jesuits begin missionary work among Native Americans living thereabouts carrying out Jesuit plans for converting them to Catholicism instead of allowing them continue practicing their traditional way of life which they considered a threat both spiritually and politicallyto Spain…. By searching for other routes through Canada he probably also hoped to find passage route available via Southeast Passage which lay across Isthmus Of Panama between Florida and South America but no such route could be found despite numerous searches… On October 10th 1685 Lavoie de Turennes reported having sighted Cape San Antonio about 8 leagues [about 20 miles] south latitude [on modern day Lake Pontchartrain] offshore from St John’s Island Probably related[ly] to Spanish efforts under Diego Velázquez not yet fully successful in finally closing that open sea passageway between America & Mexico One year later (November 4th 1685) Captain Jean Baptiste Point du Sable arrived off Grand Isle with 36 men bearing news that Christopher Columbus had reached Florida about Thanksgiving Day - well within Spanish territory! This discovery upset many English Protestants because they believed their God given right To possession Of those lands had always been based upon divine right rather than title derived from human occupancy……… After some discussion it was decided by De Grave et althat since Point du Sable’s arrival “the whole parish lie divided among us into parishes … each man being apportioned accordinge unto his trade oristry”…..Thus we can see how early Slidell may have resembled today’s complex web of parishes with similar boundaries created gradually over time due largely to economic constraints….. area lying adjacent directly or nearly so unto shoreline constituted wharfage rights….. On November 1, 1815, Slidell was founded by the French and Spanish in what is now Louisiana. In 1840, it became an American territory following the Mexican-American War. On July 4, 1845, it became a state of the United States after being ratified by the people.
