Slidell is a parish in the Baton Rouge Metro area. The population was 20,746 at the 2010 census. Slidell was founded by African Americans in 1853 as a small agricultural community on the edge of Baton Rouge's east side. By 1860, Slidell had become a thriving slaveholding plantation town and served as an important center for cotton trade and transportation. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Slidell fell to Union forces under General John Lee; it remained under Confederate control until January 1870 when it reverted to Union control. In 1898, Slidell became the site of one of two black towns in Louisiana (the other being Thibodaux) when white residents of Baton Rouge annexed both towns during Reconstruction. After white racist violence against African Americans began to increase throughout the early 1900s, slidell’s black residents successfully lobbied for passage of a "Jim Crow" law that segregated schools and businesses within their town boundaries. This measure failed after large numbers of blacks took up arms against white supremacists in response to this discrimination. With its dwindling slave populations and lack of opportunities forAfrican American citizens during Reconstruction-era Louisiana, Slidell slowly regained some degree of prosperity starting in the 1920s through various industrialization initiatives spearheaded by local businessmen such as J.P Banks Jr., who built his first office building there in 1928 In 1932-1933 Sliderdell experienced its worst floods since before European settlement due largely to poorly designed levee construction that allowed water access only from certain points upstream while omitting most downstream areas creating what is now known as "The Sliderdell Flood" which destroyed homes, businesses and killed more than seventy people including twenty six children according to some reports
Slidell is a small town in Louisiana, located on the Mississippi River. The population was 9,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge-Jefferson Parish Metropolitan Statistical Area. The beginnings of Slidell date back to 1815 when Frenchmen settled in what is now Slidell. In 1832, two brothers named John and Auguste Doyen built a log cabin near Slidell on the present day corner of Second and Third Streets. The first post office in Slidell was established in 1835. For many years, it was known as "Nantes". In 1862, Confederate General Joseph Johnston's army passed through Slidell and stopped at the local train depot for food before continuing its onward journey to New Orleans. A group of local citizens petitioned for annexation into the Union Army during World War II and were successful; this event is commemorated with an annual parade that takes place in downtown Slidell on Veterans Day (November 5). During their time as a community, residents have donated land to several schools including First Baptist Church (now part of Drury University), Episcopal Bishop Hospital (now Ascension Parish Hospital), Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (later Christ Episcopal Church), Baptist Bible Chapel/Mt Olivet Chapel (later Calvary United Methodist Church) and Our Lady Of The Lake School District #2 which opened in 1951. Today there are twelve private schools within one mile of Slidrell High School which provides opportunities for students from all walks of life to engage in rigorous academic programs while maintaining strong social obligations such as sports teams and club activities

One such example is the town of Alexandria which was established near Baton Rouge in 1862 amid construction efforts related to Fort Sumter (later renamed Confederate Fort Monroe). The economy of Slidell has changed significantly over time as well; although there are still some businesses active hereabouts, most activity now takes place within the larger metropolitan area around Baton Rouge or New Orleans. However, many aspects about this community remain unchanged; for instance, much shopping and dining can be done nearby without having to leave your backyard!
