Slidell, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Orleans in the eastern part of Louisiana. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Mississippi River and is bordered by Thibodaux to the east, Slidell to the north, New Iberia to the northwest, and Jefferson Parish to the south. The town was founded in 1810 by French colonists as "Chateauguay." It became an American town in 1831 when it was chartered as a city by General Andrew Jackson. The city moved from its original location on Turtle Island near Slidell's wharf to what is now Main Street near US 61 in 1881. In 1960, Slidell became a parish within Orleans County and retains its own government with a mayor and three commissioners. The economy of Slidell is based largely on agriculture which includes raising cattle, pigs, poultry, cotton crops (of which rice is one major product), corn (maize), beans (a type of lentil), sugarcane (the primary crop for centuries) and dairy products such as milk and cream. There are also some small businesses that provide services such as plumbing and lawn care; however, most residents rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods. Slidell has two elementary schools - Central Elementary School located off Main Street between US 61/Cameron Boulevard and Donnellan Middle School located just east of US 61/Donnellan Boulevard - each with about 350 students; five high school districts serve slidell-area students: Perdido Beach High School District #1 serving users from Highway 29 across Bayou Teche until Dogpatch Drive; Hammondsport-Lafayette High School District #2 serving those living along Highway 9W past Hammondsport until Joe Gibbs Freeway; Lafayette Consolidated Independent School District #3 serving users from I-10 through Roosevelt Road until Vance Avenue; Lafourche Parish Senior High Schoolserving students up through eighth grade only

Slidell was founded in 1819 as a small village on the southern bank of the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly during the early Republic, becoming one of the most important cotton trading centers in Louisiana. Sliding cotton plantations became a major industry in Slidell, and its citizens were deeply involved in politics and public life. In 1879, Slidell acquired its current name, after General John C. Breckinridge, who led Confederate forces against Union forces at Vicksburg. The town declined during World War II but regained some of its former prosperity after the war. Today Slidell is an active community with a growing population and economy.
On July 24, 1803, the United States of America was created from a group of French colonies. The area now known as Louisiana was part of this new country and became part of the Mississippi Territory. On January 12, 1812, President James K. Polk approved a commission to purchase 2 million acres (8 square miles) in what is now New Orleans from the Spanish for $10,000 per acre. This purchase made landfall on American soil for the first time since 1775. The city of New Orleans quickly became an important center for trade and commerce in the Louisiana Territory. By 1800, it had over 100 businesses and 3,000 residents. In 1815, the territory was divided into two parts: East Louisiana went to Texas while West Louisiana went to New Orleans. The city continued to grow rapidly throughout this period; by 1830 it had over 1,600 residents and 300 businesses! In 1822-23, Mayor François de Lesseps led a successful campaign to reestablish control over New Orleans by declaring it an open city under French authority again subject only to French law and regulations. This campaign helped revive trade within New Orleans among both English traders and French Huguenots who had formerly been limited to trading with Lafitte’s pirates off Cape St Vincent! During these years Napoleon III was Emperor of France and his government moved its capital from Paris to Metz in central France in order better organize government services closer to its people—an example followed by other capitals such as Berlin and Moscow during their respective revolutions in1848-49). As a result of growing population density (New Orleanians were more trusting than previous generations), problems began arising that would lead directly to Katrina: public drunkenness becoming an issue; tax evasion; social unrest caused by economic inequality between rich people and poor people before Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29th 2005
