Slidell, Louisiana is a city located in the parish of Slidell, La. It was founded in 1871 by John P. Sligh and his brother-in-law, James H. Bowen. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. The town has since grown to over 12,000 residents and is home to several businesses and restaurants that date back to the early 1800s. The first firearms were brought into Slidell by General Nathaniel Lyon during the American Civil War from Missouri. He then organized artillery for General Robert E. Lee’s army and used Slidell as his base of operations for supply and storage purposes during the war. On July 1, 1881, following Reconstruction in Louisiana after the end of the American Civil War, Sligh donated land in downtown Slidell to establish a public square on which he could build a courthouse and other civic buildings with funds provided by himself and others within his community. In 1903, Mayor J B Bowser granted permits for handgun manufacturing companies within town limits; these companies would later become known as “Bowser Manufacturing Company” (later renamed S&W Arms), “National Firearms Corporation” (now Smith & Wesson), “Peregrine Arms Company” (later renamed Colt) and finally “Slidell Arsenal & Rifle Works Incorporated” (later renamed Remington Arms). These companies manufactured handguns both domestically (through local production) and exported them throughout America until 1938 when they were all merged into Winchester Repeating Arms Company effective January 1st of that year
