During Reconstruction, Slidell became an important center for black development and politics in southeastern Louisiana after it largely recovered from Reconstruction policies enacted by former Confederate president Jefferson Davis. In 1971, Slidell gained its current name when state legislators moved into new buildings on Main Street and renamed it for then Senator John Slade (R). In 2002, Steve Jobs announced he would establish Apple Incorporated here and designated this location as his "birthplace" for his company's history starting with its inception just south of downtown Mobile, Alabama on April 1, 1976

Slidell is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie– Slidell Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1805 by General James Wilkinson as an agricultural and trading post on the east bank of the Mississippi River. In 1906 Slidell became a city, and in that year it merged with Metairie to form the New Orleans metropolitan area. Slidell is located at (29.766667,-82.666667). According to the U.SGS National Map, it has a total area of 362 square miles (904 square kilometers). According to local legend, Slidell's first store clerk named Bill Slider invented spreadable bread which he served from a wagon while walking his dog across the river. The bread quickly became an important commodity in this southeastern border community and was soon sold throughout Ouachita Parish and adjacent states for goods such as butter, cheese and eggs. Slidell's history begins with its incorporation into Rapides Parish on December 1, 1805 as an agricultural village called "Falltown". From then until September 30th of each year -slidell celebrated its anniversary- every day was marked by special events including markets open to all citizens plus picnics outdoors where refreshments were provided for both lunchtime participants and evening guests...In 1809 when President James Ketchum announced plans for Congress to deliberate over what would become known as Texas Purchase -the Louisiana Purchase- Falltown voted not to ratify it because they desired independence from Spain rather than annexation into her empire! Consequently on October 2nd1809 -an entire week after Texas had been acquired by our nation- Sliprells meted out their own justice when & against John White who had recently bought 100 acres (40 ha) of land near present day Slideller Bayou just north of downtown...In 1861 during Confederate America’s Civil War & slidell played its significant role within that conflict too residents turned out in force on November 11th when Union troops attacked forces loyal to Jefferson Davis –a move later dubbed “The Battle of Slidell”...During Reconstruction following the war efforts many African Americans relocated here from other parts of Louisiana fearingboth political retribution from white Democrats AND economic decline brought about by hard times...Many businesses failed during this difficult time & much violence took place due especially upon cotton planters seeking revenge against those they believed had wronged them)...Today slidellerians continue their proud traditionof being friendly neighbors regardlessof political affiliation through annual music festivals held at various locations throughout town along with numerous civic/ charitable functions...For more information please visit our website or contact us at 713-986-4141
