During World War II, Slidell became one of several landing areas for American military forces after Japanese submarines torpedoed two naval ships early on December 7, 1941, destroying them offshore near Pointe Coupee on Lake Pontchartrain (now Gulfport). At that time Slidell was known as "the D-Day Town" because so many Americans had come down from New Orleans to participate in what has been called America's largest amphibious assault ever mounted against an enemy force ashore (). After Hurricane Katrina struck southern Louisiana on August 29, 2005 (and before landfall), Slidell experienced some of the highest levels of flooding ever seen there – with water reaching up to inside homes and businesses. The damage done by Katrina was greatest in Slidell; however, much of inland Jefferson Parish also sustained significant damage or loss of life due both to floods andEMA damage caused by Hurricane Rita a few weeks earlier.

Slidell is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 10,563 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest parish in Louisiana after New Orleans. The original name of the town was Slidell Plantation and it later became known as Slidell Heights. The community was founded in 1837 by Captain John Sledge and his wife Anna Maria Slade as a post office on a bend in the River Lafourche. In 1840, Captain John Sledge donated land to build a courthouse and school west of the old fortifications then under construction on the bluff overlooking Slidell Landing on the river. The first courthouse building burned down in 1851 but was rebuilt withslate from an Indian mound near present day Slidell Landing and named for Captain John Sledge. A new court house was erected in 1865 and used until 1902 when it caught fire and burned down again. In 1902, Judge Augustus Hays built a frame jail which still stands today at 12 Epps Street across from County Courthouse Annexe #2 (now called Slagle Hall). From 1895 until 1935, slidell had its own daily newspaper "The Daily News" which also published weeklies during World War II before that paper's cessation because of lack of funding. In 1945, General Dwight D. Eisenhower visiting Slidell made his historic speech about American democracy at Fort Smart Park adjacent to Court House Annexe #1 (now known as Patton Hall). After thatspeech General Eisenhower reportedly said "I like this place very much - I think it would make an excellent location for my future presidential Palace". A plaque honoring Ike can be found outside Court House Annexe #1 (now known as Patton Hall) where he delivered his speech about democracy over 50 years ago today! Slidell has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming an agricultural center due to its rich soil; transitioning from one type of cotton farming to another during Reconstruction; experiencing rapid growth following World War II thanks to military occupation;declining during the 1970s through1990s due largely to high levels of migration into neighboring parishes;and most recently experiencing significant redevelopment following Hurricane Katrina which caused some property losses but also initiated numerous new businesses and jobs opportunities within town limits..
