slidell, la. is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 158 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–St. Tammany Metro area. In 1814, Canadian fur trader and explorer Pierre Beaumanoir founded what would become Slidell on the banks of the Mississippi River after spending two years exploring its vicinity in search of new land to settle. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army was retreating from Gettysburg when he ordered his artillery to open fire on Union soldiers near Sliderdammer Dam; this caused an enormous explosion that destroyed most of the town and killed more than 100 people. The blast also crippled much of Slidell's infrastructure including its water supply and post office which remain operating today as a museum with slidells as its mascots. Slidell experienced another devastating Explosion in 1945 which destroyed most of downtown along with many homes and businesses nearby (the blast occurred less than a mile from where the current elementary school stands).
Slidell is a small town in southeastern Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie- Slidell Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Slidell comes from a Native American word meaning "to cross over." In 1818, Captain John Sligh established an outpost on the west bank of the Mississippi River near present-day Slidell. The town was named for him and his family. In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee attacked Union forces at Battle of Mansfield Hill, killing many soldiers and wounding many more. As a result of this attack, Slidell became one of the first places in Louisiana to recognize secession from the United States as a formal act. An early settler in Slidell was Capt. Samuel Dooley who built what is nowDooley Park on land that he donated to the city in 1837. Dooley's home still stands today within walking distance of downtown Slidell. Dooley Park served as both a public square and burial ground for local citizens until it was dismantled around 1840 due to lack of funds and because slaves were then not allowed buried without owner's permission or compensation

Slidell is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and its original inhabitants were Native Americans who hunted and fished there until 1810 when white settlers arrived. The town was named for Captain John Slidell (1784-1850) an American naval officer who fought in the Mexican War and then served as a delegate to the Louisiana Constitutional Convention of 1812. In 1827, Captain John Slidell's son, James C. Slidell (1801-1875), founded what became known as "The Landing" on the north bank of the river opposite Baton Rouge where he built a wharf/shoreline for larger vessels to unload goods from New Orleans and other ports on their way upriver to be sold in St. Louis or Mobile Bay. By 1830, "The Landing" had become an important commercial center with two stores, four homes and 150 acres (60 ha) of land including present-day Slidell In 1850, Confederate General Braxton Bragg landed his army at Prairie du Chien Illinois while retreating from Fort Donelson Arkansas after successfully besieging that fort during the Battle of Fort Donelson which helped Confederate forces win their independence from America during the American Civil War. At Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter's order Porter disembarked all his warships near Prairie du Chien Illinois with orders to march them back downriver for refit at Forts Jackson and Steele parallel to Baton Rouge if needed before moving into Napoleonville east of Baton Rouge should that fort fall within Confederate lines (). Commodore James Bogue anchored his squadron outside Port Hudson Mississippi River just south of Grand Isle Island off Grand Gulf Arkansas about 25 miles (40 km) upstream from Prairie du Chien Illinois () When Union Navy Commodore Isaac Watts learned about this move he ordered his squadron under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter () consisting of USS Constitution () USS monitor (), USS Ticonderoga (), USS Quincy (), USS Erie () HMS Warrior () HMS Beagle ()) towards Grand Gulf Arkansas but they never reached shore (). On July 16th 1865 USNS Tecumseh grounded on shoal so longitude 109°15'00″N - 89°25'00″W while en route between Beaufort Sound Naval Station Just South boat channel deep water
