On October 25, 1800, during Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of America, Shreveport was captured by American forces under General Robert Rifles and took into custody with other French colonies that were annexed to America during the War for Independence. After France fell from power in 1802, most of this territory became part of Mexico until it gained independence from Mexico in 1804. In 1811, Nicholas Broussard founded a trading post at La Salle along Arkansas River which served as a center for trade with Indian tribes located between New Orleans and Mobile Bayou along Alabama shoreline. By 1816, Broussard had developed a brickyard and several cotton plantations around his post which he named "Bascule", meaning "place where two roads meet." The site became home to one of Shreveport's earliest churches – St Joseph’s Episcopal Church – built in 1830 beside present day Jackson Street on land donated by Donald Lightfoot Ballou (1801-1884). Ballou was also responsible for laying out much of downtown Shreveport including Jackson Street between I-10 & US 90 southward from Baton Rouge; later renamed Jefferson Avenue Streets), Monticello Boulevard & Canal Street eastward from US 90 northward to today's Waterfront Drive/Hwy 9W/US 71 southward from I-10 westward He also laid out much new territory within modern day Bossier City limits: areas now occupied by Franklin Park (northwest corner thereof), Northshore Estates (southwest corner thereof), Southshore Estates (east corner thereof) and Freeport Beach/Prairie View Terrace (southwest corner thereof) It should be noted that although many streets or neighborhoods inside Bossier City boundaries were laid out by Ballou - such as Magazine Road & Broadway westwards from Main Street - almost all development outside those boundaries occurred after 1860 when railroads arrived in central Louisiana
