Shreveport, Louisiana is a city located in the state of Louisiana. Shreveport was founded in 1821 by Captain John L. Shreve and made its official name in 1857. The population of Shreveport was 1,451,906 as of the 2010 census. When it became a city, it had an area of just under 22 square miles (55 km²). Today, however, Shreveport has grown to encompass over 282 square miles (725 km²) and has a population of over 7 million people. Shreveport’s rich history can be traced back to when Captain John L. Shreve founded the town on the banks of the Red River in 1821. At first, Shreveville consisted only of about twenty-five families and was not very prosperous because there was no real industry or trade within its limits. However, with time and effort from Captain John L. Shrivels family and friends,shrewvale grew rapidly into one of the most thriving towns in New Orleans County at that time! In fact, after only two years Captain John L. Shrivels family moved their business upriver to what is now known as Metairie so they could continue farming their land and grow more crops! In 1857, Mayor James Hogg appointed Mr. Chas Chandler as shrieveporthisCityCouncilman for District 2 which included present day southeastern Livingston Parish! From this point on until 1973 when mayor Quincey Jones surpassed Mr. Chandler as City Councilmember for that district; all City Council meetings were held at City Hall! It should also be noted that prior to this time all City Council meetings were held without public notice just like other governmental bodies such as School Boards or Firefighters Squadrons! This practice ended when Mayor Quincey Jones increased funding for City Hall which allowed for more open sessions leading to better communication between various branches service!! Lastly we must mention Mrs Marilyn Humphrey who served on our City Council from 1970 through 1977 before she resigned due to health reasons !!!
