With new transportation options available since Reconstruction began, business grew rapidly again until World War II when large numbers of African Americans were brought into white society through Operation Varsity duty during World War II munitions production plants nearby in Port Arthur and Hammondsville. During Hurricane Katrina (2005), damage to homes and businesses within central business district caused some $130 million worth of damage with many residents displaced across Greater New Orleans Area which included Metairie, Jefferson City, New Orleans East/Southside/Stanton area etc., as well as parts or all of Baton Rouge metropolitan area outside preparedness guidelines or bounds...In spite very difficult living conditions for many weeks after landfall nearly all human habitations were destroyed or damaged beyond repair including churches where people had offered their space for free...Aftermath saw vast looting by looters primarily consisting black people who made little effort to rebuild while local law enforcement did its best but could not prevent widespread violence throughout several days following landfall especially along levees which functioned more like barriers than roads between communities that continue to reside today because they are impunity zones today." - From: "ShrevePORT – A History" by Don Epps ISBN 978-1-53130-542-4

In recent decades, downtown Shreveport has seen significant redevelopment as a center for arts and culture; many new businesses have cropped up around Canal Street since 2007 when Hurricane Katrina destroyed most of downtown New Orleans
