In early 1936, Shreveport businessman Leroy Hinton decided to start a small electric power company in the city. He named his company Southern Electric and began constructing a new plant in the City Park area of town. The plant was completed in 1937 and became the first steel-framed electric power plant in Louisiana. Southern Electric continued expansion into other industries, such as trucking, telephone service, and air conditioning before folding in the late 1970s. In 1836, two years after New Orleans was burned by Andrew Jackson during his unsuccessful attempt to retake control of Texas from Mexico, General John Crain drove white settlers out of what is now eastern Shreveport through an bloody campaign called "The Great Blackout." Most whites fled into neighboring states such as Arkansas or Texas before being forcibly driven back across Red River by Crain's troops under General Abraham Lincoln's orders – an event which helped spark Reconstruction in America following its Civil War victory over Confederate forces

In 1865, with Confederate forces retreating from Arkansas following their defeats at Franklin Ford and Chickamauga Creek, many soldiers abandoned their horses along the banks of the Arkansas River for fear they would cross if pursued by Union forces; this event is generally known as "The Muleshoe Crisis". A few weeks later on April 9th 1865 General Robert E Lee set up shop in Richmond County (later Jefferson Parish) adjacent to what is now downtown Shreveport while his army continued its retreat towards Chattanooga Tennessee across Alabama border under orders from President Abraham Lincoln not to surrender until such time as all Confederate armies had been destroyed or retreated into Mexico or Central America; this event is generally known as "The siege of Petersburg". On May 5th 1865 general Robert E Lee withdrew his army from Chattanooga Tennessee instead continuing east towards Maryland where he ultimately surrendered two days later at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Virginia - thus ending World War II for both sides involved. After World War II ended some 10% ($27 billion dollars) worth of American reconstruction projects were carried out in Louisiana including education reform initiatives like Bill Condon's New Orleans School District No 1 which opened kindergarden schools throughout Greater New Orleans beginning in 1964; one hundred years after Gilded Age investors founded NOLA Land & Development Company whose parent company remains headquartered in Shreveport today).
