Shreveport is a city in the southern United States. It is the seat of Shreveport Parish and is located on the banks of the Red River. The population was 318,391 as of 2010. The name "Shreveport" comes from that of Capt. John Shreve, who built a trading post here in 1812. The present-day city was founded by General Samuel J. Moore in 1837 and named after him, although he did not live there long enough to be actually honored with the name. The first organized town in what would become Shreveport was called "Foley". In 1846, Colonel Daniel Boone purchased land east of town from William Hurt for $5 per acre (the land had been donated by Missouri Governor James K. Polk). He named his new community "Booneville" after himself and his father-in-law, Major Jacob Boone Sr., also a founder of Springfield, Missouri. At first glance, it seems strange that an act of Congress would later rename one entire parish in Louisiana after one man – but this was only part of the story behind Booneville’s establishment as an American town distinct from its surrounding rural communities. In addition to naming their community for themselves and their families (and occasionally other distinguished local figures), early settlers brought with them important pieces of American culture which helped give Shreveport its unique identity: football (a game played on small ranches until Stephen Aiken imported Cornish rules from England), baseball (founded by Will Rogers at nearby Earp Field), dance halls (such as Cimarron Hall) and social clubs such as Glee Club which can still be seen today at League Park downtown or First Baptist Church across Broad Street from City Hall where President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered his famous Cairo Address in 1938! During World War II, many residents left to serve in combat - including brothers Johnnie and Sam McGee who served under Admiral Chester Nimitz - but most people returned post-war when hostilities ended just weeks before Christmas 1945! After the war ended, many young men decided to stay put instead of returning home; they started businesses such as Master Machinery & Trucking Company and Chilton Tire & Rubber Company which continue today along Jefferson Davis Highway near Marshalls department store. One significant event during this time period were two hundred thousand Americans who gathered at New Orleans’ Jackson Square during Tulane University's former president Booker Tilden's inauguration to demand voting rights for African Americans - something that eventually led to passage of the Civil Rights Act Of 1964! Many well-known businesses cropped up during these years such as Bebe’s Clothing Store which became known for carrying Mode Fords; Ladd’s Hardware became well known for selling shotguns; Waffle House ownership passed through several hands before being bought by Subway sandwich restaurants chain owner Carl Lewis; Confederate veteran General Custer lost an arm while fighting against Ulysses S Grant during THE CENTENNIAL WAR; Shaw Brothers Pictures filmed parts of CHINESE WAR OF 1893 HERE IN SHREVEPORT!!! Finally we come to our current day with Hubcap Incorporated whose slogan could very easily have been “Where things have always been done better”! All kidding aside though – Shreveport has certainly experienced some amazing changes over time including becoming one of America’s fastest growing cities with nearly 800% growth since 2000!!!!!!
